County of Montgomery probably has good a chance as any of success, sadly some of these schemes will inevitably fall by the wayside there are already several new builds that are around 20 years in the making and nowhere near completion, with competing demands for enthusiasts cash from many preserved lines current appeals its tough.

Except they haven't been. What is the actual difference between the current state of 3440 and the current state of 9017 for example?

And I bet you far fewer people have seen the T3 in the last two years than any years previous to that.

30120 - under repair after derailment?
    928 Stowe - undergoing overhaul
Met no. 1 - I assume you mean No. 23, as no. 1 is an 0-4-4T and very much alive and well.

    Yes, you're absolutely right.

Thank you all for the corrections and new information. Shows the problem with working from memory, especially when the memory seems to be styled after a rusty collander

    The difference is intent.
The Bluebell Railway intends to return 9017 to service as soon as funds/capacity permit.
The NRM intend to keep 3440 locked up for the next 30 years.

So? It's undergoing overhaul, many locos when in that state are not seen that much. When it's finished and running on the swanage what an attraction it will be, and will be seen by even more, additionally it could go on loan to other railways.

To me, there is no point in having a complete loco with no aim at making it a runner. You might as well just make a mock up out of MDF

Much as I prefer runners, the reality is that locos are extremely expensive to overhaul and there is only a finite need for them. Especially where older, frailer, locomotives are concerned, I would rather see one “stuffed and mounted” but properly looked after than left in an outdoor queue for preservation, where the difference from a scrap line is sometimes hard to tell. And, yes, I do think there is validity in seeking to preserve not just the machine in “trigger’s broom” state, but previous generations’ work as well.

So how much of your hard earned money are you willing to contribute towards achieving this (or are you just expecting the average non-railway enthusiast tax payer to happily watch the goverment fund our hobby out of their taxes)?

Indeed, well said Sir. Another big "problem" is that the A1SLT and its associated P2 project "make it look relatively easy". This encourages some other new-build projects to start up which don't have the money, management, expertise, public relations acumen, doggedness (is that a word?) or experience (other than with social media "likes-counting") to run such complex projects. Some will definitely end in tears, or the scrap bin if they've managed to get anything made at all. Don't misunderstand me, I'm very impressed with many of the new-builds and have put money towards three of them, but some of them are, quite frankly, unlikely ever to come to fruition. It would be wrong of me to name them as things can change, but I think most people will have an idea.

I think the series run in Steam Railway (?) sums it up pretty well.

At current inflation rates i cant see it coating 5 Million to build a Clan, lot less to it than a redesigned P2.

A significant amount of horsepower, adhesion and tractive effort less too.

Look, the point I was trying to make in post 2988 was that whilst there is some frustration that all the pretty locomotives are shut away, there are 5 new build projects , intending to build 5 new (mostly) pretty and interesting 4-4-0's which if even only one is actually completed would be a lot more pretty and interesting Victorian/Edwardian locomotives than we currently have the opportunity to enjoy.
I was attempting to be positive about the new-build projects
