Either formally or pushed right to the back of the shed?
(in terms of engines that have run and then been scrapped/otherwise laid-up as irreparable)

Just musing on the supply/demand issue

    Did it run in preservation?
I hadn't thought of diesels. I'd guess we are still further back down the curve on them, and there are still "lots" knocking about.

If diesels are included, then a class 11 was once destroyed in a shed fire on the Mid Hants.

I think that we should make a distinction between locos that are to be regarded as museum pieces, some of which may never run again, and locos actually scrapped or dismantled. Some of those were bought by preservationists as a source of spare parts - they probably shouldn't be regarded as ever being preserved. Then there are those left to rot in the undergrowth with little hope of resurrection, but the story of KESR "Gervaise" proves that it can happen.

One loss that springs to my mind is from the early days of the cash strapped Ffestiniog, which scrapped the WHR Moel Tryfan - and hasn't been allowed to forget it for over 50 years! "Palmerston" and now "Welsh Pony" show how times have changed.

Can't think of any scrapped/never to work again steam locos, but there have been a few diesels.

20206 - sold for spares then scrapped.
31123 - serious engine failure, then sold for spares and scrapped.
31166 - sold for spares then scrapped.
56040 - 2 failed traction motors and alternator fault, cheaper to buy a replacement loco than repair.

S15 30841 was a main line runner when based at Chappel. I believe some problems with the frames meant most of the usable bits* we're transferred onto 30825 which is now a regular on the NYMR.

*I may be paraphrasing and oversimplifying here

If some engines were scrapped then we might not known that some of them existed. If they were preserved by someone and no one knew but then were lost or scrapped. I’m thinking more small ones or narrow gauge

I believe your right. I think the components of 841 that were in good condition were used to restore 825. I think 841 has twisted frames that are more or less beyond repair.
