You were intimating that the boiler from 60041 was now on 60103. It isn’t.

But I did qualify it by saying "with the 'spare', A4 type boiler previously on FS now a spare for Bittern?" which does suggest that I was well aware that the boiler currently on 4472 was the A3 boiler. Anyway it's not worth falling out over, sadly there are far more important things for us all to deal with at the moment. Keep safe.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

So does that mean it's(Flying Scotsman's boiler) off Hyperion then? I know it was felt important to correctly rebuild the A3 Boiler for originality.
On other boilers.... Always wondered if the N2 Boiler ever ran on a J6 or similar? And the 7Fs were on Compounds? Wonder how many other classes have boilers previously fitted to extinct classes? And how many such 'extinct breeds live on in other classes? Now there's a puzzle to keep us busy in quarantine!

GWR's standardisation policy springs to mind, especially with the Std No. 1 boilers fitted to the long-extinct Granges and Saints as well as the Halls, Mod. Halls, Stars and 2800s. That said, the Saint and Grange classes are undergoing a small revival these days - both new-build projects making use of the boilers from "more modern" locomotives.

Pretty certain that the boiler currently on the Stirling O1 (fitted at the last overhaul) was previously on an LCDR Kirtley R1; it survived as a stationary boiler at Ashford after the loco it was last attached to was scrapped.

There's roughly 80% of a Maunsell K class 2-6-4T still existing if you know where to look ;)

The original S&D 7Fs were fitted with Derby G9AS boilers similar to the standard Compounds. In due course the later large boilered (G9BS) 7Fs were also given the G9AS boiler as there were so spare non standaard G9BS boilers built. When Compound 41000 was withdrawn in ?1950 it was stored for a few years at Derby. When it was decided to overhaul it for operation in the mid 50s it received a newly overhauled boiler from the boiler pool and its old boiler in turn was overhauled and went into the pool. Then along comes 53809 for its last overhaul and by chance gets the one off 41000. So today 53809 has a boiler off the preserved No.1000 which itself is preserved with a 7F tender off 53806.

These two locos followed each other in the Rainhill cavalcade in 1980 (yes, thats 40 years ago this month!) but I never thought to try to photograph the two together.

Oh, I wasn’t trying to be especially cryptic - I was thinking of U boat 1806, ex River Torridge.

Does the Dukedog’s boiler count, from an otherwise unrepresented-in-preservation Duke class 4-4-0?

You've done it now :(. How long before some bright spark decided that it would be a good to rebuild 1806 back into its tank engine guise?:)

Well Butler Hendrrson has VALOURs tender. But wondered about those with standard boilers. The N2, the North Eastern as well as the well known GWR. That Midland G6 boiler relic will have ran on 2F M&GN 4-4-0 0-4-4t 2-4-0s and even the ex Ottoman LTSR 0-6-0
A River would be a fine addition! But what else did survive in another "host" loco?

Did I read somewhere that the Y14 on the NNR has (or used to have) the boiler off an F5?

    On the Bluebell:

    - The Dukedog boiler previously came from a Duke
    - The current O1 boiler was previously on a Kirtley R1
    - The current boiler on Birch Grove was apparently previously on a D3 0-4-4T and an E3 0-6-2T radial tank

It's feasible, but I don't know without checking the boiler records, that one or other of the boilers on the two U class locos may have been at some point on one of the extinct members of the mogul family, i.e. N1 / U1 / K / W.

The spare H class boiler may have been round the houses as well. The one currently fitted to the H class was previously shared around about half a dozen other H class and O1 class locos, but that was a standard SECR boiler design and widely fitted to many locos of class H, O1, Stirling Q1, Kirtley R1 etc, so you would have to check the records for the specific boiler.

Bet the owners would be mortified at wanting their boiler for a new build J6, or D3, most interesting though... even if you built them a new one. It's part of the locomotive s history

Not forgetting the S15's boiler that graced a King Arthur (N15) or two during its history.

I believe of the four S15 boilers present at MHR, at least two are ex N15 King Arthur.
Also of related interest, the boiler now residing with B1 61264 was fitted in 1962 and had previously run for three years on 1st of the class 61000 Springbok up to it's withdrawal

Edit : one of the N15 Boilers was built for 799 'Sir Ironside' and another 451 'Sir Lamorak' according to my notes

There was one interesting article in an issue of Steam railway magazine about the Butlins locomotives.
It turns out these were saved due to one man writing letters to many organisations suggesting they save a loco. In the case of his letter to Butlins fortunately this was passed to a board member who was an enthusiast himself and they decided they liked the idea and would get some locos for their camps.

Initially they approached Eastern Region who were not so helpful so they switched to LMR. The guy who wrote the letter then had further correspondence with them and suggested Royal Scot, Duchess of Hamilton, Princess Margaret Rose etc based on their interesting history, or Royal connection.

According to the article he did recommend they go for the Patriot called Home Guard too, on the basis that many visitors to the camps may have been in the Home guard, but Butlins decided this loco didn't have any particular interesting historical past.

There were plenty of others, I think for example he had written to the councils in London and tried to get them to obtain the Duchess City of London. It did say what other organisations he had written to, but only the Butlins one had been successful. I can't remember the guys name but the article was an interview with him as he was still alive.

Ah - don't you just love boiler histories! The NYMR's 80135 now carries the boiler (or it will when its overhaul is finally finished) off 80116 which was allocated new to Whitby in the 1950s, so would have regularly worked over the line in those days.
