The story goes that it was dark and I think there was a failure with the intended 4f banker, so the crew jumped on what they believed was a Black 5 that was still in steam only to realise later on what they’d done.

The axle loading was indeed the reason for the ban.

As Matt A has already mentioned, Jubilee’s regularly made it to Bath Green Park with the southbound Pines. Many of the Barrow Road Jube’s were seen on this turn.

Axle load may have been an issue but it was not the issue. 5Xs were put of gauge through the tunnels at Bath as well as through some stations. Similarly GW outside cylinder loco were also banned - too wide across the cylinders. People forget just how tight things were in Devonshire and Coombe Down Tunnels. Peter

Pictures suggest that the clearance is about the same as on The Tube

I'm willing to bet a Mars Bar that Jubilees were banned from the Tube, as well.:) Maybe even the Underground.

Black 5s surely have slightly wider cylinders than Jubilees, so were they banned too?

No, Black 5s were permitted. It was probably height not width that was the issue. The 7Fs have 21" cylinders

Devonshire and Coombe Down tunnels may have been narrow single-track bores, but they were able to take the SDJR 2-8-0s. These locos had large 21-inch diameter cylinders and were among the widest over cylinders in Great Britain - almost a full 9 feet, and nearly 5 inches wider than a Jubilee. If a Jubilee had loading gauge issues, I can only surmise that it was to do with cab roof edges. But was a Jubilee cab any higher than for a Black 5?

Some LSWR and GCR engines were slightly wider than 9 feet over platforms and side-tanks. The SDJR 2-8-0 will soon be joining Urie members of the "wide brigade" on the MHR.

No they did a lot of work on the S&D. For those interested in locos which worked over the line Peter Smith’s book is a great read

I am pretty sure they did run along the underground and tube network.

Excellent day out today behind 30925 on a well loaded but not full 5 coach train. Well organised and seemed to be enjoyed by the families who comprised most of the bookings. I think we were the only two gricers. My only criticism is that the tables in our coach could have been cleaner. They could do with a really good scrub before tomorrow. Coach 4211. Thanks to everyone at the MHR for our first steam since 7th March.

An early Christmas present for the Mid-Hants Railway.

Thanks to Paul Orrells and wsr.org for the image.

Update: Long queues reported on the A39 at Holford, Somerset due to an HGV hauling a large black locomotive.

I wonder which loco that could be. ;) <BJ>
