I gather there was something in Heritage Rail about a project to new-build the L&B's Baldwin 'Lyn'.
Does anyone know anything about this or have any contacts?

I understand that project details are detailed within the forthcoming issue of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Magazine, which has already been or is about to be posted to members of the L&BR Trust.

Information will appear on the L&B website once members have received their magazine.

I would have thought along with as the frames for Lew have allready been assembled, and most of the patterns are available to build one.

My impression is that Yeo2 is going on the back burner for a while and everyone will see what lessons need to be learnt from the building of Lyd by the Ffestiniog. I know L&B folk have visited Blodge a few times to see progress on Lyd, and that Lyd will visit the L&B as soon after completion as feasible.

My guess is that the new Lyn Group (just announced in the magazine) is an attempt to fast track a replica Baldwin (maybe in just 3 years), and that Yeo2 will be recommenced later when track extensions, and other work permit.
Axe and Sid will clearly be the in-house steam for the next few years, and Lyn would come along just in time to help on a hopefully longer line, and maybe Yeo after that when the Axe and Sid go to 10 year overhauls.
    Just my guess!

I surpose being an american design, which is seems to be more simple then english ideas (no offence intended), it was relaised that it maybe a bit cheeper to design and construct. So maybe they decided to try an advanced this scheme in the hope it can be complated quicker (presevation quick anyway) then a manning wardle.

Just a thought I possibly could be compleatly wrong!!!!

Well... not really, to be honest. It cost more than the Manning Wardles, and some aspects of its design & construction were unlike anything you would've found in the UK! I wouldn't have said it was any more simple, but it benefited from Baldwin's large catalogue of standard components, so designing it would've been relatively straightforward.

The real reason it was built was down to an engineering strike, which had occurred in the UK at that time. The L&B desperately needed a fourth engine, but none of the UK firms would've been able to deliver within an acceptable timescale, so off to Yankee-land they went!

In this day and age, its design probably leads to easier simplifiaction than the Manning Wardles. Bloody nice machine though, full of character, and (before it was given that horrible stovepipe) rather elegant, it must be said. Not a word that usually comes to mind when talking about American kit!

Any non-L&B members interested in becoming part-owners of the new Lyn please contact me and I can send you details.
Ownership shares cost 762 pounds each, payable either in one sum or over 30 months.

Not really. The Ffestiniog MW replica, Lyd, should be ready shortly, and will visit the L&B occasionally. It makes sense to wait and see how Lyd behaves and learn lessons from her before moving on to work on completing Yeo.
Further, a full size MW makes sense when the line is considerably longer. The smaller Lyn will be of greater use in the medium term, when the extensions to Parracombe and back towards Lynton start to come on stream.

Finally, a lot of people have been putting money into Lyd; it'd be more difficult to persuade people now to support another loco of the same class. On the other hand, they may well be excited by the prospect of the Baldwin.

    Just my thoughts! =D>

Surely a true replica of a Manning Wardle loco will perform in much the same way as the original design did?
Lyd being an exception as it is a representation rather than as accurate replica?
So is Yeo to be a copy of Lyd or an accurate replica of an L&B loco?

I thought LYD had been improved with the addition of a superheater/steam dryer, something the originals never had.

There is now a teaser on the L&B website - the Lyn Project's own website will be launched as soon as the DNS propagation is completed and I can upload the first content - hopefully by Monday. look out for 762club.com

    or you can go direct:
    http://www.lynton-rail.co.uk/railway/projects/lyn

the actual Project Lyn website isn't up yet - should be by tomorrow, ISP permitting
