    Hello 46137!:)

A BR class 3 standard 2-6-0 (77XXX) was actually projected some time ago: https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/a-new-build-br-standard-class-3-is-planned.105766/

.... and unfortuntely died a quiet death.

Re: Driving wheels. Quite why Swindon D.O. seem to have gone out of their way to produce a non-standard component for the 77xxx is one I'd love to know the answer to. I can't offhand think of any GW loco which used a 17 spoke 5'-3" dia driver (have I missed one?). It's not even as if no other Riddles standard utilised that diameter. Any ideas, folks?

The axles 0n the 76XXXs were 1/2"bigger in diameter than those on the 77XXXs/82XXXs, as well.

So as with most ‘Standard’ types (Class 20’s, 37’s and 47’s I’m looking at you regarding modern traction ;)) Really not surprised that the Standards weren’t all that ‘Standard’ then?
Why am I not surprised to find out Swindon had to be a bit different though? :)

A couple of random musings ...... Which side did the driver work? Perhaps any new 77xxx (aren't we up to 77022 now?) should carry a copper capped chimney?

Only three weeks till the next update on 82045 and this thread comes back on topic! ;)

I believe the question of a copper capped chimney on 82045 has been asked before! :)

Did copper caps have a functional purpose or were they purely decorative?

Just decorative I think, I could be wrong but I think some LNER A4’s had them albeit painted black.

In the early days chimney caps would be spun from copper or brass even if they were painted black. The whole chimney being fabricated from many pieces. This is just the easiest way to make them. As chimneys became shorter and you could cast them in one piece this practice died out and it became an aesthetic choice.

In the late Victorian period elegant simplicity was more the fashion which is probably another factor in their disappearance. 30 years earlier ridiculously over the top was more in vogue.

Correction. Swindon was the same….everyone else was a bit different. ;)

Copper caps give the exhaust mofers a little thrill on the way out. It makes them feel special… :D

113 unbroken years of loco design and somehow the GW still never got round to developing self-cleaning brass or copper. ;)

The extremely sad news about Ivan is a great shock to all those who knew him. It is difficult to believe that we have lost such a seemingly fit, lively and friendly person. He and his lifelong schoolboy chum and fellow photographer and SVR enthusiast Spanner - so called because he regularly lost his large P-way spanner, were part and parcel of BH P-way folklore. Ivan was a true steam enthusiast whilst Spanner was a diesel man. You can imagine the banter. Ivan was also a loyal friend to all those who knew him and a fantastic support to his wife Pat during the last difficult ten years.

A long term supporter of both the SVR and the 82045 SLT. RIP Ivan, you will be missed by all those fortunate enough to have known you.
