Another annoying thing is as you say courtesy, sometimes even saying "alright" or "Hi" seems too much for some people and they just stand and look like someone dropped a turd in their bed!

Hahahahahaha ..........so true, or as Lilly Savage once said 'they looked at me as if I'd put a skid mark on a white towel in their bathroom.'

If they think a DSLR makes a lot of noise, they should hear the racket my Mamiya and Pentax 645s used to make. Only one frame per second but the power wind sounded like a tractor and the shutter "clunk" was loud enough to wake the dead. :smt003
Still and video are not happy bedfellows but we all have the right to use the camera and medium of our choice. I do sound recording too and both still and video photographers can be a bind. Shutter and winder noise from the still cameras and the noise from videographers replaying their clip or collapsing their tripods even though the loco can still be heard heading into the distance. If the sound is more important than the image then I'll forgo the shot and set up my sound gear well away from the gallery.

Your point about a directional mic is a good one. I have a professional videographer who attends photo charters I organise and he has no worries about being a part of the gallery as he has the right mic for the occasion. I've seen and heard the results of his filming and not once have I heard a single shutter fire.

It's not unique to the UK either.

I recall one year in Chabowka at their Mzana Dolna parade, there was a German photographer who turned up and sat on a hill with a great over view of a field.. at one point a random photographer walked down the track at which, he pulled out a Duck Whistle and started blowing it profusely.. followed by a jumping up and down with a verbal tirade in german... this was highly amusing...

Thinking it couldnt get any better the other photographer looked at him and carried on walking... The German guy pulled out a white flag and his duck whistle, at which we were all having a good laugh...

Finally he went back to his car, pulled out a shot gun and fired it into the air...

At this point everyone left for somewhere else !!!

Most serious videors do have directional mics, but I have found that even one costing over £100 still clearly picks up sound generated at 90deg 20 feet away because it is so sensitive, but that is what I want it to do, to be able to pick up the sound of an approaching loco when it may be a mile away. This among other things is one reason that I try to avoid 'galleries'. These tend to be looking for the approach to side on shot. I want, if possible, the whole passing shot to disappearing in the distance. The gallery is also often on the move before the train is out of sight, this can be seen on my video of Scots Guardsman on Shap last week.
So if you see a lone figure standing on the hillside 100s of yards from anyone else, wave but don't shout....

    A very good point Martin.

At Bridge of Allan last Friday when I walked down the Up platform there was someone with a video camera where I wanted to take my photograph. I approached him and asked him where he wanted to video and explained where I would like to be. We both reached an amicable conclusion as to our positionings and chatted away until the train arrived. No aggrevation, no vanity or hiss-fits, just easy compromise and we were both happy with what we got.

How hard is it to be considerate, accomodating and compromising with each other?

And that sort of compromise seemed to happen most everywhere - except Cleghorn and Huntly

It is not difficult to reach an amicable solution where the people concerned are reasonable and considerate, it's when the one inconsiderate prat appears late and ignores those who have been waiting for some time, and takes up his position regardless.
