It could be that evolutionary forces for engineering efficiency in HR is seeing more mature centres of excellence - where Black Fives & Jubilees gravitate to Carnforth and Ian Riley as Bulleids gravitate to Selling & Herston?

Whilst I'm sure that VT has the technical know-how to bring 5593 back into full health, it doesn't fit very well with the brand any more than 10A suddenly getting very excited about accelerating the overhaul of another Bulleid ahead of, say, 45110. So moving the loco on elsewhere does make sense, that is if it is of value to any other owner.

LSL has enough on its plate currently. That said, it wouldn't be out of place at Crewe.

How does VT differentiate itself in a very competitive market where 10A is a Stanier centre of excellence and running three Jubilee's currently . Crewe has a Scot and a Black 5 so no one is short in the short term of Stanier motive power. The long distance market could well diminish which means tours or at least steam operation may become more focussed on lines radiating from home bases . The need for gauge friendly go anywhere engines becomes less important

The market for a Jubilee is probably fairly small notwithstanding the need then to fully fund what I suspect will be an extensive overhaul.

Those who advocate a large main line fleet of engines available may need to reflect that in a challenging and competitive market fleets will be maintained to be sustainable and optimise the returns and the days of an engine in traffic to do a few tours a year a long gone

I’m sure the majority of VT’s passengers would be as delighted with a nice LMS red Jubilee as they are with a green Castle.

Did Tyseley not have an appeal for 5593 a while back? Perhaps the money donated could be put towards the Bloomer.

I believe that Leander only has one more main line outing booked, that being the RTC's Cumbrian Coast Express on Saturday week, 30th Sept. After that , who knows..............:(.

The Michael Whitehouse article is a very good read, but nowhere does he say the Kolhapur will never be restored, he does however set out a very strong argument for a standardised fleet given the diminished engineering capability of UK plc and the difficulty of getting parts manufactured. The Jubilee shares no commonality with a Castle.
So I can think we can safely assume 5080 is certainly the priority, but the whole theme of the article was one of uncertainty and steam being at a crossroads.
What I found of great interest was the hint at restoring 4965 as an oil / bio fuel burner, and that he felt this was a relatively easy and logical next step!
All in all, very thought provoking and lot of good sense in there.

That's a shame, plus will be away so can't ever pop out to wave her farewell.

I wonder what will happen, I assume that the overhaul of 46441 is taking up all the time at the moment, never sure how Leander was ever sustainable on the mainline considering how little use she appeared to get, but thanks to Mr Beet for letting us enjoy her!

Little use can mean less wear and tear, but only the owner will know the economics!

Firm favourite of mine, will never forget a run to Carlisle in the early 2000s when she beat the Caledonian timings - had a new found respect for Jubilees after that!

Hopefully she will return and back in red would be nice too as 5690.

I could be wrong, but from the last interview I read with Chris Beet he did say something along the lines of he didn’t want to put it through another overhaul again but he did prefer to see live steam…
Admittedly this was in Steam Railway a few years ago though.

I will no doubt be told off for supposition but there is always the possibility an agreement can be reached with WCRC to overhaul the engine as part of the broader WC pool

I do have a soft spot for 5690 as it was a large part of my childhood and a day with the engine at the KWVR back in the spring was rather special

TBH I really wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case. Anyhow let’s get back to chatting about 5593

Don't shoot the messenger but seen a suggestion on another forum that WCR have purchased Kolhapur?

That I do find surprising as I would have thought that if the judicial review goes against them WC will have a lot more to think about than acquiring additional motive power

Interesting move if correct, 45110 and 45593 both over a very short period.
