I’m not much fussed about the bridge per se. I am pleased that a heritage railway has put so much thought into a structure that has no useful purpose any longer. That is as it should be and is the essence of preservation. Too often I feel the amount of care given to such decisions is not that great. Who will notice….to which the answer is probably no one immediately, but the ambience is eroded and the place changed, so it does matter.

Decisions like this should come hard if we aspire to really be preserving railways, and I would argue that quite often we are not. We are preserving certain artefacts (usually locomotives) with some care, but the rest is just a baseboard.

Hello I am feeling better. Most railways have more than one bridge so knocking one out will be easier for many at these railways but this railway does not have many. A lot of passengers it will be the highlight of the journey looking out for the bridge.

Especially if they’re knocking one out.

See post 2020. Actually, there are three overbridges in addition to the structure concerned here. There are a number of underbridges also.

Steam Railway are reporting that 6 of the locomotives from the Penrhyn Castle Railway collection are to be re-homed imminently, following a review of their collection. One of those locomotives is Robert Stephenson 0-6-0T Haydock, which according to the article, is to be re-homed on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

The significance is that it’s very similar to a FYNR locomotive, is that correct?

Which issue & page please? I’m a digital subscriber and thought I’d read the latest issue cover to cover but didn’t see this (although I have seen that Vesper and Hawarden have moved)

Very similar to the locomotive of the contractor that built the FYNR and carried the first services over the line I think? The original was named 'Freshwater' at the time.

Whilst i can see the desire to add another engine, one that resembles one that worked on the island, I have to question, what will the plans be for it, the IOWSR have still got to complete the E1, and overhaul W8 Freshwater, and 37 Invincible and in the meanwhile at least one of the ivatts, is going to come due for its ten year overhaul, Haydock will have quite a wait, if the plan is for it be be overhauled,

How about the plan is “put it on display in Train Story”?

No reason why every locomotive has to be an overhaul prospect. Some locos can tell a better story while just on display.

I'm not sure on the issue number or page number as I'm at work and haven't got it to hand, but the cover image has 45690 Leander on it and it has features on the NRM's Loan Policy, the overhaul of Black Five 44806 at the NYMR, the Leiston Works Railway and some locos in Iraq.

The mention of Haydock is a very short paragraph in an story about the rest of the Penrhyn Collection, which just says it's another item on the move and would be going to the IWSR, it's pretty much hidden in the middle of the story.

Have to confess I don't really see the point in Haylock just as with hordes of Bulleids in other places

I’m sure it was reported 3 or 4 years ago that Haydock might be going to the IOWSR. Is the latest news any more definite or imminent?

At least two locos from the Penrhyn collection have moved so far so presumably there’s substance in it

“We have been reviewing the way we display our collection as we look at how history is presented at Penrhyn Castle and we will be re-homing some of the locomotives that are unconnected to Penrhyn Castle’s story to other museums, where their stories can be better explained and interpreted.”

Doesn’t explicitly state where each one is going but there has been lots of discussion about various locos moving to various locations.

Howarden has gone to the Middleton Railway. There is no intention of overhauling it and it will simply be put on display. The Railway now has three examples of the Hudswell 0-4-0ST to show how this basic design changed over time. Howarden represents the Victorian era, Henry de Lacy II the early 20th Century (1917) and Mirvale the end of the lineage (1955). Much changed in those years but there are odd pieces of the design that continued to be used throughout.

I’d imagine the IOWSR would have aspirations to potentially return it to working order if possible. Initially a period of display at Train Story seems likely whilst feasibility is assessed, other projects completed and decisions made.

Interesting that the original loco was named Freshwater. I wonder if Haydock will be bestowed with that name (even if only
a comestic restoration). That would make two locos name Freshwater on the line.
