No as 45593 was operated in maroon livery during the 1980s as 5593 and certainly in 1986 when it spent some time at Southport Steamport working a series of Southport - Manchester steam-hauled services courtesy of Liverpool Area Manager the late Brian Wilson

This argument assumes that preservation has no history of its own, and is solely there to record what went before. At that point, that picture by @Fred Kerr raises significantly more questions than those posed by the anachronistic use of an LNER headboard on a Caledonian locomotive - ones that go beyond what might reasonably be characterised as "what might have been".

We aren't going to agree on this and we've been through it time and time again. I believe that 'preservation' is about railways and its equipment in the period when they were in common use, i.e. prior to preservation, and is a recording of history from that period. You aren't going to convince me otherwise.

I accept that compromises are necessary on a working preserved railway, not needed in a static museum setting. But I cannot go along with changes beyond those necessary for successful operation. I have made my position clear; I have nothing more to add. You won't persuade me and I doubt that I could ever convince you.

Sorry about being possibly obtuse. The point was the simple question of whether preservation adopts the principle accepted by LMS2968 (a valid point which I have no problem with) or creates something which might / could have been but circumstances at the time prevented it.

And I respect that - as you say, gentlemen may disagree. I merely observe that the picture in question, even ignoring the headboard, raises a number of issues that, at the very least, test the boundaries of "necessary for successful operation" to their very limit.

if you followed from the beginning you would realise it's a question of what is preservation which Gala events try to illustrate; is it a case of recreation as LMS 2968 prefers or is it a case of demonstrating cases of "what ifs" which some visitors prefer. Gala organisers try to satisfy both parties but when parties prove reluctant to compromise then such blathering that you query becomes the result. My attitude ? Take what's on offer and be grateful there are volunteers willing to make the necessary provision of rolling stock and infrastructure.
