Crimson Crab on the ELR 21 May 2014

For many years, the East Lancashire Railway ran its LMS Hughes Fowler 2-6-0 Crab locomotive in BR lined blsck as No 42765. When a major overhaul became due some years ago, it was decided to return it to service in LMS crimson lake livery as No 13065.

Problems and delays dogged the overhaul but finally the railway was ready this week to start testing and mileage accumulation out on the line. The opportunity was taken to reward covenantors to the overhaul by offering them the chance to ride the dining set for the day, with refreshments, behind the loco whose restoration they had supported.

Up and down we rode in glorious sunshine until around 2 pm the CME decided to cease running for the day, in order to attend to some issues before tomorrow's duplicate running. Credit to the ELR for an excellent day out in glorious sunshine, and for bringing a major overhaul almost to completion.

I wonder if there will ever be the opportunity to see the two red crabs displayed together?

    Sadly seems doubtful.

When I visited the NRM in November it would appear that at the yard end of the station hall a new wall and toilets have been put in blocking access outside. Unless this is only a temporary thing which appears doubtful the Crab would seem marooned along with the Spinner & Gladstone. The two lines to the left which currently house the M7, J52 & Maude are however still clear.

It is a shame because there didn't appear to be a long time that the Crab was displayed at Shildon after repaint a few years ago and now she is stuck with the others in the gloomy station hall lighting with no clear view of them bar Gladstone.

On another note it would be nice if Boxhill could be displayed better in the near future!

I agree. I've visited the NRM a few times over the last couple of years and have yet to see it! On my last visited I asked three or four members of staff where it was, a couple had never heard it of it, one said he thought he'd heard of it but didn't know where it was, but thankfully sent me up to the library bit (Search Engine?) where a scan on the system showed it was in the Learning Platform. Which was locked up. Maybe next time!

Sorry for going off topic as 13065 looks grand :)

Today 13065, The Crab was in steam hauling covenanter specials again. Everything is going smoothly with the running in of the locomotive and is seen in the image below passing Burrs with the dining set in tow.

I'm just in the middle of reading the RCTS book on the Crabs and Stanier Crabs - It contains a photograph of 13065 when all but new, and shows that it was rare in that its cylinder cladding sheets were painted with a maroon panel, lined. That would make an interesting and authentic livery variation!

Is the Crab being used this weekend for the 1940s event?

whilst i'm not a fan as mutton dressed as lamb(sorry Mark 1's as Pullmans) I understand as needs must.

However maybe the ELR missed a trick in not painting the Diner set in L&Y colours rather than Pullman...

I was wondering if anyone knew when the Crab was likely to be entering normal service on the ELR? I'm assuming now that 61994 has departed, there will be a pressing need for it to be in service asap.

Joe Public associate the Pullman look/brand with the Orient Express, even if copyright prevents it being called that, a not a fan of pretend pullmans, but at least they are not a million miles from choc n cream MK1's, unlike red 8F's.

Not wishing to give dates but hopefully Mid July should hopefully see it back back out for more tests and running in then hopefully entering traffic. But that is as long as no further issues are found.

Not to be confused with the Night Ferry using continental stock in the UK on a separate train either.

Footage and pictures of 13065 on the ELR from 24/07/14. The loco looks superb, as was the weather. Both the loco and the back of my neck were in the same livery by the end of the day.
