The 14's boiler has been removed, work can now start on with removing the tubes and prepping it for a NDT, this is where known suspect areas of the steel outer plate work is cleaned with a grinder so that the NDT engineer can use an ultrasonic probe to determine the thickness or detect fracturing on the waterside.
For example, just above the foundation ring, to check for grooving and around plug holes in high stress areas, to check for any fractures. Also, a dye penetrant inspection will be carried out on the copper firebox tubeplate ligaments, to check for any fractures. Work can start on removing the concrete that is applied to the top of the cylinder block, to assess the condition and extent of corrosion. After the NDT has been carried out an overhaul plan will be prepared and then agreed with the boiler inspector and insurance company.

Thanks to all those involved with the boiler removal.

It'll be good to see this engine return, and hopefully it will be followed by others that haven'rt been steamed for ages - 1366 springs to mind - but I think the real crying shame at Didcot is that there isn't a broad gauge engine available for use. The broad gauge line should be their unique selling feature but seems semi-abandoned these days, a crying shame after all the work that went into building it and constructing "Firefly".
