    Hello Everyone,

You all know that Im apart of Ramsbottom Model Railway Club, well ive put an idea forward to the other members about maybe next year building a portable layout I have mentioned the idea of maybe doing 26D Bury shed in 00gauge.

The only problem i have is that we dont seem to be able to get hold of many photographs of the actual shed....this is the old steam shed not the electric car sheds.

Ive seen both the books from eric bentley and the other one which has a red and purple/orange cover and have seen a few but apart from that we have nothing else.

Does anyone on here....maybe Andy C or Ebay maybe able to help us here or anyone else? maybe you neil?

Even layout plans would be useful. Ive seen the ones in eric bentleys book but i just want to make sure that they are correct.

    Cheers

    Dan

Why not ask at HMRS forums?

Hawkins & Reeve LMS engine shed Vol 1 LNWR (presuming from the low numbered shed code it's ex-LNWR?) - should have a few pages and a plan. If it's not ex-LNWR the other volumes cover other companies. Will also give background on LNWR sheds in general that might help.

Cheers Tony but what is the HMRS forums?

26D was never apart of the LNWR but was East Lancashire Railway, Then L&Y, Then LMS and finally BR. The original electric car shops next to the old steam shed was originaly the ELR's main locomotive works. I suppose history has repeated itself again lol

The H&R books are certainly the place to start, but Bury was L&Y rather LNWR, so you need Volume 3. This though is the track plan therefrom.

By the red and purple book do you mean the Book Law "Railways in and around Bury"? There are several reasonable photo's of the shed pages 40 - 44.
An another unusual source is Ian Allan Rail Portfolio 13 The AC Electrics, page 11 is a colour shot of the electrics in storage taken from a passing emu, but is little better than the Book Law shots, just a different angle.
There is a similar shot of a full shed, probably on a Sunday,in the Ian Allan BR Steam Motive Power Depots LMR by Paul Bolger, page130, along with a very simplified track plan (not a patch on the H&R one above).
    Hope this helps, Harold.

The original ELR workshops where situated above platform 4 at Bolton Street station on the site of the old Palais (now the new sports complex). Locomotives and wagons were lowered/lifted down the wall by a lift and if you look closely, you can to this day still see some of the remains today

I sorry but who told you that?

Ive read most of the books and not one of them have ever mentioned this.

From what ive read the original works are the electric car sheds which are still standing and are now the elr works so i guess history has repeated itself.

The area you are thinking about use to have a big watertank ontop of the hillish area with a water crane coming out but also a signal gantry was located in the wall. The area where the sports complex is use to be a church.

The information given to me by my father (who regretfully is no longer with us). He studied the history of Bury for many years and had a wealth of knowledge and old photographs.

I agree with you that a chapel formerley stood on the site the sports complex, but many years ago the old Bury Palais stood between the sports complex and the wall overlooking Bolton Street station.

From the information given to me this was the site of the original ELR works (or possibly a predessor). My father had an old picture of a wagon being lowered down the wall, slightly to the south of where the facing home signals were situated.

Regretfully I have no idea what happened to all my fathers old photographs as he apparently gave them to someone (who my mother could not remember) before he died.

Hope someone else could confirm this information

    Regards

    Dave
