Let me correct that for you.

London Victoria is now out of gauge.

    That is bad news.

Whilst I have no reason to believe that this is false information, can I question the logic of that comment?

Bulleid Pacifics are Bulleid Pacifics. If Braunton does not fit into Victoria then surely neither will Clan Line. If Clan Line will not fit then the Belmond Pullman cannot run with steam. I can think of many reasons why Network Rail might get into serious difficulty over such an event.
There has always been a problem over some locomotives arriving at the buffer stops of P1 at Victoria because of the platform curvature but this will be a first for a Bulleid Pacific if true.

More checking needed on that one, I hope.

I was merely remarking that a loco can not "go out of gauge" Only the track and infrastructure does that.

I thought that the steam trains used platform 2.

Yes Mike you are quite right. I forgot about P1 as it's short! And by the way, I am pretty confident that there is not a problem with Victoria but there was a problem with the route of Braunton that caused it to have to start from West Brompton.

A couple from me from a perfect weather day yesterday. Went to Westcott near Dorking and got caught out, the linesdie growth here since my last visit is unbelievable so had to go against the light. Second location at Worting Junction where it is also getting to be a problem.
I notice it now carries a 70C Guildford shedplate, a depot which to my knowledge never had any Pacifics on its books. Does Mr Hosking live round that way?

Two excellent shots James. We were further away to the south in the same field. I'll try again to upload a shot, but I've been having big problems getting it to work! Out of interest, does anyone have any idea why steam was shut off at this point when running 15 late and uphill with no TSR in place? I had hoped to snatch a few shots at Redhill last evening, but my train from London Bridge was 20 late and I arrived at the exact second that Braunton eased away!

With the entire train turned at Salisbury I wonder how many of those at the back all day thought they would have been near the steam loco for at least half the journey and not nearer to a 33 all the day! I can only assume there was a good operating reason

You are correct. It was done for operational reasons as the timings were very tight with the planned moves.

I think that the platform copings swell in damp weather.

Just to be clear. There is no problem with access at Victoria. It is as it always has been in recent years. The problem is literally down the line.

Sorry. Wasn't clear enough. It's an issue between Clapham and East Croydon that is a known problem and so nothing new, as I understand it.

I quite understood that Al, it's just that I can't resist using sarcasm to have a swipe at NR's hopeless knowledge of gauging.

It may be against the light, but that second shot in particular has worked out rather nicely.

Maybe they lost the shedplate and there were a load of 70C plates going spare after the MHR spring gala. :)
