34046 Braunton

Discussion in 'Steam Traction' started by SteamHawk216, Aug 26, 2009.

Just received the very latest word on Braunton:

"We have no booked operations and will not be available for the ACE on the 4th Sept. We hope to be able to carry out a mainline test in September, but this is subject to the air brake trials on WSR being ok."

I'm not sure if Braunton will now be in use from tomorrow on the WSR as rostered. Something else to find out...

  1. Don't shoot the messenger...but...Braunton has been removed from the current WSR roster. No 4160 takes its place today

Work by WSR Plc continues at Minehead on the new tender and it'll be "some days" before it is ready. Also the owners and their contractors continue to work on the air braking and the mainline equipment.

I don't understand why they don't update the news page on the Braunton website with info such as this. According to that, the work will be done in time for 34046 to re-enter service at the WSR SSG.

Mind you, they've got a long way to go to match WS Restoration's site, where the most recent news entry is over three years old. It still talks about WS Restoration doing the overhaul for 6412, which the WSRA sold a couple of years ago....

Steam Dreams would do well to update their website too (and to bring their office staff up to date). I don't think the latest newsletter which I received today mentions the alterations to the motive power on the ACE. Oh well.

Thanks for bringing us all up to date Steve. I don't suppose their were any indications what might replace 34046? Presumably one of Mr Hoskings other locos will step into the breach. Anyway, best of luck to the team working on Braunton and I look forward to riding behind it on the mainline soon.

My guess is that now their 'all Southern' ACE event is in disarray they are waiting till they have some idea of how to salvage something for the September trip before saying anything. You can't help feel sorry for SD who probably thought that with so much time in hand there would be no problems. Such is steam preservation!

I wonder if Clan Line could step into the breech for a leg of this trip? After all, I have been led to believe that it is now on WCRC's safety case, and it would give them the opportunity to use it on another enthusiast's outing. One can but wish, although I've decided to forsake this trip as a bit too expensive when taking into consideration accommodation. This post would probably be better served in the 'What's Going On' section.

Unfortunately 35028 is out for maintenance during September. My best guess would be 70000 stepping in or possibly 30777 doing more than the first leg.

Item on wsr.org.uk - thanks Steve!

No 34046 has made its long awaited return to traffic. Now sporting its brand-new tender SR 4-6-2 no 34046 Braunton resumed its work on the West Somerset Railway on 9 August 2011 when it hauled the 2.05pm from Minehead. If all goes well the locomotive will be based at Bishops Lydeard for the foreseeable future to help with the busy summer trains. No word yet about commencement of main line trials.

Hopefully not, the good news is that there are some tyres for the loco.
