It does look in a right state, poor thing. Still, so did 34046 back in 1996 and look at it now. Here's to hoping that it's the first of the five JB locos not currently in working order to see life take a turn for the better, even if it is going to need an awful lot of TLC (and money) in the coming years before it seams again.

Not very respectful to those gallant men of 249 Squadron who gave their lives defending our freedom is it?

There again; neither is letting it rot as the last remaining spares are stripped from it ...

There was no rhyme nor reason for What locos were 'saved' by sheer chance of being despatched to Woodhams with the remarkable coincidence of all but a handful of locos not being scrapped.
It was pure geography that Woodhams got a preponderance of Western and Southern engines.

Tricky one that. While I agree with the sentiment, lots of Battle of Britains didn't even make it as far as a desolate siding in Carnforth in the 21st century, instead being scrapped fairly unceremoniously fifty-odd years ago. So these days, when I see a survivor, I tend to spare a thought for the specific name commemorated, but then project that memory onto all the men who fought in the whole battle.

A fitting tribute could be to rename/number the spamcan that the boiler or other parts ends up on. Only for a month or two but it would allow a "what could have been" for those who saved her in the first place.

Through James Brindley Nicholson 249 Sqd gained the only Fighter Command VC so I would very much like to see '73 steam again and fly the 249 flag.

Do we know why exactly 249 Squadron has been bought, as of yet? I know it looks very likely as a spares donor, but you never know with railway preservation. Some locomotives which started as spares donors have been restored in their own right further down the line.

Maybe one day the Bluebell or MHR or Swanage could hold a display of Battle Of Britain plates. I for one would make a visit to one of these preserved railways to see a great collection of plates.

I wonder what the insurance liability would be? :)

Don't the MHR have a decent collection of name and number plates in the Lyme Regis cafe building? Are they genuine or replicas, or "prefer not to say"?

If I were them, I'd prefer not to say. The same can be said of the collection at Yeovil steam centre. I thought quite a collection until I saw something like 35031 amidst the numbers on display. Maybe a red-herring, but annoying for anyone still wishing to 'tick off' numberplates.

About to be joined by 34016? A suggestion in the mhr thread that Bodmin has been extracted from storage for a move up north.

I don't think anyone has even stated definitively that anyone has bought it. The options range from sale to the owner of 34067 as spares to remaining in John Bunch's ownership and restoration to full working order. We'll find out eventually, but it may be quite a while before we do. There's certainly an opening for another spam can on the main line, notwithstanding the possible return of 34092.

We don't even know whether any change of ownership has occurred. I suspect that Ian Riley needed it moved prior to his workshop relocation. Maybe the current owner is owed a favour by WCRC, or some agreement has been reached over accommodation costs? There are lots of possibilities, but until someone issues a statement, or we see pictures of the boiler being removed at Carnforth, or whatever, we can only guess and say what we'd like to see...

Out of interest (unless I have 6 numbers on Saturday), does anyone know what Mr Bunch wanted for 34073? And, indeed, what you would actually get for your money?

There was a figure of 300k suggested in Steam Railway a few years back.
Seems excessive considering there was a working GWR 2-8-0 advertised at a very similar price around the same time.

it came with the usual "Buy it or I will scrap it" threat and was supported by quotes similar to 2nd hand car dealer like phrases like "it comes with a good boiler and full set of spares"
