are you sure the support crew are not just sevicing it ? As regards that steam leak, can Derby1 shead some light on the possible cause, based on his knowledge of 28 ? the pipe from header to cylinder has a joint about that area, is it blowing by ?

You mean the main steam pipe to fireman's side ? My report is from a reliable source, not servicing !

    Precisely...
It then disappears through the running plate, then bolts via the flange on the end, to the top of the cylinder casting.

yes, there is a flange between the pipes.
that looks bad news about the Engine failing but al least they have another one on site in steam ready to work the return

It could be serious, do you know if it's a bigend failure or just running hot?

It was intended that they doubleheaded the return working.

West coast won't know until they drop the rod and inspect it, York has a wheel drop, if needed .
Worse case scenario wheel set out turn middle big end re metal bearing if the white metal has run the lubrication to the big end will need looking at the pot should have been topped up , assuming the oil was getting through the big end middle connecting rod bearing is a split white metal if i remember right ,

As she kept time towards the end of the run I would hope it was not too serious and maybe in discovered in arrival, timings do not suggest she limped into York?

MNs do have the stink bombs to warn of a hot big end so maybe this is just a case of running a bit warm

To be honest with out actually being there and inspecting the big end, none of us can know for certain, possibly it didn't show on the run, as you know when a big end goes, by the knock and vibration , in which case you would stop, protect and inspect , if the bearing was hot on arrival, you have to fail it, it could be insufficient lubrication , As i said before, unless your there, none of us will know unless JS decided to post an explanation.

    Hopefully not too serious.

Regardless, she looks the biz. And brilliant in BR Green, as predicted.

Doubt there will be much in the way of official comment but it will be interesting to see what strategy is used to prove the loco once repaired. As @acorb pointed out its probably done under 1k miles and far less at normal operating speeds, so today was effectively another stage in the commisioning process.
