Pedantic mode: Technically 75079 doesn’t have a tender yet as the MHR are building new one for her. 75079 lost hers during her stay at Barry with when it accompanied 73129 to the Midland Railway Center.

I was looking back through this thread while taking a break from cataloging my Hi8 Tapes and found this clip of 73096 in happier times on the main line, working the Worcester Standard on the 24/04/99.

All steamers look the same to me...........

Ok its a fair cop but I plead in my defence that 73096 has been mentioned in the thread.

I understand that 75014 has oval front buffers obtained from one of the diesels which was at Barry. The only one of the class ever to be fitted with non round buffers.

    Basically the shape! #-o #-o
If you are wanting to know why oval buffers are sometimes used, it is to prevent buffer-locking on curves where the vehicle has a long overhang and thus throw out when on the curves. Sometimes large round head buffers are used for the same reason, especially on industrial locos, but they can be a pain when going between to couple up.

Standard 4 2-6-4 tanks (80xxx) all had oval faced buffers whereas the other standard tanks and tender engines had round buffer heads.

The LMS pacifics and 2-6-4 tanks also carried oval buffers along with some ex GCR locos.

I assume it was supposed to reduce buffer locking on tight bends with locos with a long overhang on their wheelbase but they are many, many anomalies.......................70045 carried oval buffers towards the end of her like.

The overhaul off the engine has now begun. The tender has been started first, with remedial work to the bunker required and an overhaul off the brakes before the "cosmetic's" are attended too. The Tender will hopefully (or very nearly) be finished by next years Heritage festival, after which the frames off the loco will be lifted off the wheels and a full examination on the motion undertaken.

I will try and include some pics off the progress as and when time permits.
