    Correct decision of course. My only concern is that I understood that the 75mph speed limit exemption lasted for a finite period. Does anyone know if these runs must happen by a certain date?

    Well if it's not being used in the meantime, there isn't any extra wear n tear being incurred so as long as boiler ticket isnt marching on, I don't see too much of an issue.

    Well here is Bittern at York today. All ready for the show but with nowhere to go. No 9 was also being prepared for a steam test and rumour at the museum was that some tyre turning was needed. SNG had already gone back hauled by a diesel. The 8F and Stanier 5 were also tucked away out back. P1060111.JPG P1060113.JPG

    Would someone mind clarifying how the marker lights/headlamps (from 60163) work on 4464 please? My understanding of it is that they are secured onto the desired lamp bracket, then wired up from there, but can't figure out where the wires go. Do the wires go beneath the casing, as in other photographs I can't see any wires (painted blue or else) down the side of the engine?

    EDIT: Just seen Al's photographs, and can see the little blue boxes by the lamp brackets. I presume this is where the wiring goes - beneath the casing?

    The lamps are clamped to the lamp brackets, immediately behind the lamp is an "on/off" switch box. This is wired through a hole drilled into the casing beneath the cods mouth.

    Thinking about speeds of over 90mph in preservation, I'm not sure how this counts but 0n 28th October 1967 I joined the RTCS (East Mids and Lancs and North West Borders) The Border Limited at Crewe. D145 was taken off and 4498 took over for the run to Carlisle. According to my brothers hand timing, and this was confirmed by others in our coach, we were up to 70 by Winsford and in the mid 90s at Acton Bridge before being eased back to the mid 80s. Later being told that the driver was aiming for 100, but since there was a 90 limit in force, the inspector asked advised him to ease off. On the run down through Penrith speeds around the low 90s were again reported.
    I'm not sure but by this time wasn't SNG in private ownership?

    Yes, SNG did it's first railtour in private ownership on April 1st 1967. Crewe - Shap - Carlisle - S&C - Crewe.
    I do believe she hit 90+ on the way north.

    Now found it on Six Bells, started in Nottingham, did a trip round Kingmoor and then S&C to Skipton, Accrington, Bamber Bridge and WCML back to Crewe and Nottingham. 1 diesel and six steam locos involved.....

    Yes Ralph - I was on The Border Limited. 95mph just before Hartford and well inside even time start to stop Crewe - Warrington BQ......and that was with a load of 11 for 385 tons gross. 74 before Tebay and 47 over Shap. Coming back over Ais Gill there was a TSR at Kirkby Stephen that took the pace out of the climb but we got back up to 45 by the top. But speeds of 80 at Ormside and 81 around Stainforth are only things you can dream of nowadays. I have to say that the 5s - 45196 and 44690 - (in contrast to '5' performances nowadays) lost masses of time between Skipton and Accrington but it was a truly great trip and bravura show by 4498.

    Although it's good that 60007 lives on in 2013, it's sad to see a racehorse at work on a line, parts of which are better suited to shire horses.

    In view of this I wonder if it would be worth contacting SR and pointing out that their much publicised trip was not quite as unique as they were saying.

    "For this special occasion the preserved steam speed limit of 75mph will be relaxed at certain locations to permit speeds of up to 90mph to be achieved. This is likely to be a unique occasion with an A4 streamlined locomotive operating at high speed."
