    Actually i was building towrds a 'Leader' but that is well funky, definitely german/austrian in origin or perhaps french ? ( tail rods !) and what valve gear is that !

    This was a class of 29 locomotives built under licence by Societe Franco-Belge; designated Class BT it was based on the Class AT design by the same company for which Beyer Peacock provided a complete set of manufacturing drawings. SFB undertook the detail design of the BT Class in conjunction with Algerian Railways but paid a licence fee of £1500:00 once the first 9 locos were ordered; these were built in 1936 with further deliveries being 4 in 1937; 6 in 1939 and 7 in 1940. The valve gears you note were "Cossart" vertical piston-type valves whilst the reverse gear was operated by an electric motor [mounted on the side of the boiler frame] powered from a turbo-generator but there was also a compressed air standby facility. In service they attained speeds of 82 mph and between Algiers and Oran [a distance of 262 miles] the prototype loco hauled 433 tons in a shade under 7 hours compared to the need for 2 locomotives to haul any load over 256 tons and a scheduled running time of 9 hours.

    A pity they were replaced by diesel traction in 1951 due - partly - to the problem of obtaining spares.
