    From Wikipedia

"In general under the law of the United Kingdom one cannot prevent photography of private property from a public place, and in general the right to take photographs on private land upon which permission has been obtained is similarly unrestricted. However landowners are permitted to impose any conditions they wish upon entry to a property, such as forbidding or restricting photography."

Therefore if the photo was taken while on WCRC property, they are within their rights to ask for the photo to be removed. If however it was taken from, say, the footbridge at the station, there's nothing WCRC can do about it.

Anyway, getting back on track, I'm just playing the waiting game at this point for the 2 Jubilees and 45231.

I really hope the folks in Carnforth will find some stability for the heavy summer schedule in 2013 w/ 5699 in the fold.

Trust 45699 was looking better than this -- taken at Eastleigh depot 71A in 1964 - was due to go into the works but was cancelled & withdrawn

Er not quite.. the smoke box door lamp iron is in a different place now :)

Maybe the person who took this picture could use it to get a job with MI6.

Looks nice with the giesel ejector and a rebuilding as a 3 cylinder 2-8-0 was a surprise ;-)

So maybe... WCRC are trying to keep this a secret for publicity or a surprise.. for a future date and that picture spoilt it ?, still it may encourage some ticket sales..

Absolutely spot on. If WCRC have a policy of no cameras that is their option. I visit Rolls Royce and other aerospace companies where no cameras/phones are allowed on the premises at all, indeed some areas in the factories are screened off and I have on occasions been asked not to"ask questions". I am presently working on a project that I wo'nt allow anyone to see, it is patented in the UK, and overseas patents are under application, I'm not letting anyone screw up my lifetime's work. There has either been a breakdown in WCRC not communicating their policy to the photographer or he/she has broken their confidence.

Surely if it's such a big interest it's better to let them finish it first and showcase it as they wish.

if someone photographed van gough's unfinished works and sent them out before he did his exhibition.. It would be a bit of a let down and I'd imagine he'd not be happy and some may interpret the "WIP" as the finished article, not being to their taste.

Then again, the power of a "teaser" also has its merits, and this one has set the forum on fire.

the image itself won't win any awards, nor does it give any surprises (except that I personally thought Leander was more advanced that the picture shows, and maybe 5690 and 45231 won't be as quite "new year" as thought previous).

That was my point - it's a potential breach of confidentiality. Even if it's not, I still can't really see the point of posting some crappy phone photo as a 'scoop'. I'd much rather wait for the official ex-works unveiling shots.

To some extent, the fuss surrounding the publication of this picture is of WCRC's own making. Their policy of never giving any details of the work in progress at Carnforth leads to a lot of speculation and a heightened interest in any information, no matter how reliable, that does leak out. Of coures, the internet greatly increases the speed with which such information is spread. I'm not saying that their policy is wrong. It's for them to decide what information, if any, they publish, and most of the time it probably suits them very well. Call it an "unintended consequence".

Tongue slightly in cheek here... Maybe Messers Smith and Shuttleworth are playing a more subtle game than we are giving them credit for? Knowing their own reputation for secrecy, what better way to get the enthusiast world talking about Galatea than to place a spy photo on Facebook and then withdraw it once it had received a few hits? It could even be that posting the link on here was the cue to take it off Facebook? The only thing that's missing is the name of the magazine that's "rumoured" to have the photo exclusive, but no doubt that will "emerge" shortly. What better way to increase the sales of that edition of said magazine? Whether they intended it or not, that's what has happened...

To be honest maybe the enthusiast community should play Mr Smith at his own game and ignore what West Coast get up too. It is obvious that railway enthusiasts are not his core target market so maybe his business would be better off without them.

I remember a programme a few years ago when the behaviour of a few minor celebrities was under the spotlight and how their relationship with the press played out. Most of them understood no press = no publicity = no career so therefore there was a mutual respect. Some of the less intelligent ones believed their own hype and got too big for their boots and would give the surrounding public and photographers abuse. One particular knobhead (I BELIEVE it was the one on maracas in Wham) was such a pratt and used to tip out of the nightclub screaming "no pictures" and worse to the waiting press and surrounded by heavies who shoved everybody out the way. He got his just deserts though as the press photographers colluded after one particularly bad experience and the next time he came out with the usual entourage they put their cameras down and turned away! Doesn't he work in dry-cleaners now??

Maybe Mr Smith would prefer no interest, no speculation and no enthusiast pounds to maintain his toy box?

Must have been someone else as the above hinted-at person is apparently living in some comfort at his farm in Cornwall enjoying the 'Wham' royalties cheques on a regular basis.

Erm. Diesel enthusiasts...47500...green paint...do I need to say anymore?

I personally have little more than a passing interest in what's going on at Carnforth. 45699 will be ready when it's ready and will no doubt get to run on the occasional train when the 8F is otherwise engaged ;-) I'm just surprised that Carnforth seem so hell bent on keeping things top secret. There's nothing that exciting about what goes on there. Equally, I don't really care that they do so, I'd just think they'd have better things to do with their time.

I do believe when one of the 37's was being restored (676 ?), a few enthusiasts enquired about keeping it in Intercity Livery, even willing to cover the cost of the repaint, the tractor was outshopped in Maroon...

The term "news to me" is a common sarcastic remark.
