I see that PRCLT are offering supporters and the general public a chance to vote (for a small fee) on the livery for the 1st 12 months after she returns to service.

BR Blue for me, now a line up of 6023, 60007 & 46233 all in BR blue certainly would be a nice antidote to BR black & green.

I always think the blue looks a little too bright on the Duchess', BR green would be nice...

Did 46233 carry the maroon that 46229 carried during the 1990's. If so I wouldn't mind that. BR Express Blue sounds nice.

Much as I agree with you, I think you'll find you're wrong.

What 6:05 special has said is as quoted on the PMR website, so what do you know that is different.

I'm fairly certain, like many of the pre-nationalization designs up and down the country, 46233 had "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on its tender prior to being repainted into the blue in 1950, specifically in the period 1948-1950. It's a fair bet that most, if not all, of the top link express engines had that legend on their tenders.

There will always be exceptions, mind! :)

Whatever the options actually available, it's only a matter of time before someone suggests Malachite Green or some such. There is a pattern that must be followed!

Why not paint it black with 'sunshine' lettering for the number and LMS letters along with a silly number?....

Whilst I'd dearly like to see her in blue, suspect that I will be heavily outvoted by the green brigade. It would be nice if the second highest number of votes got 12 months as well, subject to enough funds being raised to cover the cost.

    On a slightly different tangent, I also thought that if a class of loco carried a livery but the particular working preserved example/s didn't wear said colours, the livery should still be fair game for such loco. A good example is LNER silver or apple green on an A4. This would leave the following liveries available for Sutherland (corrections/additions welcome);

    LMS crimson
    LMS wartime black
    LMS postwar black
    LMS experimental grey/blue
LMS black with 'British Railways' branding (see page Power of the Duchesses)
LMS black with cycling lion (ditto)
    British Railways lined experimental black
    BR experimental ultramarine (yes please)
    BR standard blue
    BR green (2 totems)
    BR crimson
    BR maroon
Oh and photographic grey if you will...

Thats 14 variations - enough for two full mainline tickets at twelve months per livery!

Well while I was out today on the Cathedrals Express, I was inspired to a new idea. A bit non-traditional, I realise, but a bold imaginative statement by the loco's owners is just what's needed in these straitened times. What could better revive the public's interest in heritage steam loco's........

    Various steam pics videos Jan-Feb 2011 084 small.JPG

Though perhaps it would suit Tangmere better :)

I was talking to a friend yesterday who has seen 6233s boiler at Crewe, he said that everyone who has seen it has remarked what excellent condition it is in considering the age and time since last overhaul. This shot from their website does bear this out. A completion date for the repairs needed was said to be Sept, but that is completely unofficial.

Taken from "The Power of the Duchesses" by Jenkinson:

-To traffic 7/38. Principal changes: Double chimney 3/41. Smoke deflectors 10/48.

-Livery changes: Red 7/38. "Wartime livery"-never. LMS Black 1947. BR Blue 8/50. Green 5/57. BR Standard green 2/61.

So there are the historical accurate choices, but as ever, "owner's perogative" !
