Nowt wrong with that - you'll have longer to appreciate any colour you want when WE have all been disposed of to that great MPD in the sky!

But we aren't going just yet - so keep those blue, green, black, and red paintbrushes to hand - who said we are boring?

One way to settle this would be to paint the cladding between each boiler band in each desired livery choice. That way, you'd please absolutely no-one, which if British politics is anything to go by, is Democracy! ;)

How about a compromise (take salt pot in right hand). Paint the loco red - but BR red. "Not an authentic livery for 6233" I hear you cry. OK let's make it a bit more authentic. Re-number and re-name the loco 46251 'City of Nottingham', the only BR red 'Duchess' to have the full front curved footplate as per 6233. That way the trust has it's red engine and the rest of us get something refreshingly different!

OK it was just a thought. (Ducks quickly to avoid low-flying paint pot!)

It's interesting some of the comments made in this thread (and not just those two quoted above). Surely the result of the poll will reflect the wishes of those interested enough to participate. If the majority don't want to see the locomotive in an alternative livery, then surely they should be given that choice?

If the end result of the poll is for the locomotive not to spend the first 12 months painted an alternative colour, then that presumably means the opinions of the many vocal posters on here drooling over the possibilities, and getting hot under the colour at the prospect of there not being a different livery, are in the minority (of those who care enough to participate and have a say in the colour scheme).

Personally I can't quite see what all the fuss is about the bloomin' colour of engines (ok, 'Thomas' livery excepted! lol). I certainly can't understand why so many people who have nothing to do with the ownership or running of a loco (not just his one) seem to feel they should have a say in how it is presented, or that owners should pander to the whims and desires of onlookers.

I'm afraid I'm not about to go out of my way to see a loco just because it's a different colour to the last time I saw it! ...then again, I'm not enough of a trainspotter to go out of my way to see a specific loco anyway. If it runs on steam then that's good enough for me.

2 ? compared to how many BR Green ?5690 and 6201 carry the flag for LMS Maroon currently, but as we all know only 8P's can carry BR Blue authentically, which is why i'd like to see more widespread us of the colour on such loco's as a change to the usual black, green and to a lesser extent Maroon.

Suprised Blue is such a long way behind in the poll, i thought a Blue Duchess storming Shap with a Caledonian headboard and blood n custard rake to be mighty tempting.

That would be a great sight. They've got the stock just need a Blue Duchess.

Time for a controversial posting chaps!

When I first read this thread and started following the voting patterns of the die-hard LMS Red contingency I too wondered what they were doing, thinking perhaps they were willing to spend their hard earned cash just to deny those who would like to see Sutherland in full BR colours! Sitting back and looking at it from a different angle I can actually see the method in their madness! Think about it, how could I make the most from my contribution???..................Well if you're not too woried about what colour wins vote LMS Red!!! Think about it, there is such a great desire to see Sutherland in BR colours that just by voting Red you provoke the Green and Blue parties to have to vote again just to get their wish! That's a much better return on your donation than gift aid! If I wasn't so pro BR I may even consider to do it myself!!!

My own personal preference is for Blue! (and I will be voting this way, but not just yet! ;-D remember there's still a long way to go!!!) As others have mentioned, a Blue Duchess, going like the clappers with some Crimson & Cream coaching stock would be absolutely sublime! Just to top it off, i'd love to see 46203 in Green.......................bring on the next televote! :-D BR Green for Sutherland wouldn't be too much of a runners up prize! I just hope my suggestion of voting Red just to boost the coffers doesn't back fire!

All in all I think the idea of a televote is an inspired choice! Equally the chance to include LMS Red in the poll! After all, it's even got me motivated to part with my hard earned cash! As is so often proved by this forum, the colour of a loco's clothing is clearly the most important part of the restoration (tongue firmly in cheek!) so why not capitalise from it! I would have preferred Sutherland to wear each colour (once that colour had recieved a certain number of votes) and the percentage to dictate the time spent in that livery, however i'm sure this wouldn't raise as much cash or publicity as everyone would get there preference and stop donating early.

Best of luck to the restoration team and may your bold and ingenious thinking behind the fundraising treat you well!

Just a couple of final remarks! I am of an age that never had the chance to experience BR steam or grouping, infact I barely remember Intercity Swallow livery! As a result I really do hope that we get to see a breathing Duchess wearing BR colours, Red is getting a tad boring!

In response to david1984, I'm sure Kieran is supporting the Blue cause, not t'other way round, you've just miss-interpreted his wording. Also Blue's not too far behind in the polls now, better tell the 6023 team not to throw out their paint brushes just yet! I wonder if they over ordered on the paint? :-D

    Cheers for now

    Paul

Well, if we can't do it - at some stage in the future - who can? Part of the preservation of an operating locomotive could be argued to be the presentation of it in the different conditions it existed in during its working life if at all practicable. And yes, that could include the suggestion from someone of late of Hardwicke in LMS maroon? Why not?

Indeed. So let's stop the frothing - and I apologise, and will take my wooden spoon away...
I was at Butterley in February and the overhaul of 6233 was going great guns in almost clinical conditions. The workshop is fabulous and all power to the team bringing a Duchess back to the main line before too long. When I was 8, I was on 20p a week pocket money, and saved up to buy a Hornby "Sutherland" from the Hobby Centre in Leamington Spa which was then £20. I have always loved the big Staniers and that saving for a Hornby one thirty years ago shows how much I wanted one, whatever the colour.

I thought i'd be pushing my luck if I added that to my post too! Doesn't mean the thought didn't enter my head! Any chance of finding a GNR tender with coal rails at the back of a shed somewhere? :-D

On the subject of paint (do I put on my body armour now? :-D) and all these Black 5's around, i've always quite liked the idea of painting one Apple Green with the M Prefix! Now nobody go telling Mr Riley my suggestion, or at least don't give my name if you tell him! :p
