Being in or out of steam has nothing to do with axleboxes; it's the cylinders that receive atomised steam. And movement over comparatively long distances, as from one preservation site to another, would almost certainly call for full certification of the running gear.

Ooh cheeky ! majority of stuff that came out was from 1965 or before !! She looked fantastic in steam today, such a tragedy that she couldn't be out tomorrow on a Valentines Day Special ! Surely this could have been a sellout with the right advertising ?

I relised that. What I should have done is made my self clearer. The point is it could be possible to get 8624 out by rail as long as Network Rail agree, although I don't know about the distance thing which could have issues with. Motra to Eastleigh is over 50 miles away by rail acording to a AA Map and my steel ruler roughly measuring...

Apparently, 48624 is going to be painted black again (Permanently)!

    From GCR Rail Mail

    Shed News
The red 8 is to be no more, although I don't think that anyone knows exactly when. Alen Grice confirms that it will be painted in unlined late BR black, although personally I am never quite sure what the difference is between say LNWR black and BR black. No doubt there will be dissenters to this change, just as there were when it was originally painted red, so all those who want to see it in it's Midland (?) red , or want to travel behind it, should visit as soon as possible.

It's all in the name - LNWR black was 'blackberry' black! I heard that the temporary weathering didn't do wonders to the red paint job, is this true?

Wonder why the GCR have taken the GWSR's 8F on hire as well as 48624 this summer - they're not short of engines are they? Isn't the Hall supposed to be back soon as well? From the outside it looks like a return to the commercially disastrous "big engine" policy.

Very miserable that 8274 isn't on the gwsr, was my favourite. :( As Martin says, 8274 gone to GCRN for the year after a successful santa season there.

GWSR have actually ended up with more locos than it needs as Broadway was not reached as soon as expected (still aftermath of landslips) so it would make sense to get rid of the loco with least time on the boiler, with the exception of 2807 as that is seen as an iconic loco for our line in preservation days. Notice I haven't actually said anything there. ;)

I also understand that 2807 is going on holiday for the summer, again. What's left? Seems like a lot of hope is being put onto 35006.

Haven't heard about 2807! 7820 will also be packing her bucket and spade during the summer, so we'll still have 4270 and probably 5542 as well as 35006 should be fairly certain by then, I understand a boiler man is expected at some point soon for a cold test, but still some stuff to do. I'm hopping something might stay a bit longer than just the gala, with all our locos off on holiday it would be nice to have one from somewhere else!

Even if 35006 is complete this year, all the drivers will need to undergo the conversion course for Left Hand Drive.

Really? As I understand it, nothing has been signed for any visit outwith the GWSR this season yet. However, 2807 has received some informal invitations, but that's all they are at present.
