With the real 48773 safely stowed away in the Engine House at Highley, I wonder if this is the first time in preservation that a working engine has taken on the identity of a classmate still in existance?

I have used the words "in preservation", because there were instances in steam-era days, like the swap of identity in 1952 for the Castle " Windsor Castle" for the King's funeral train, and of course 46100 is actually 46152 if my memory serves me correctly?

The Mid Hants Railway have previously operated 34105 as 34067 and 34051, and Swanage have operated 34072 as 34023.

Thinking about it (hence edit), hasn't a standard tank (maybe 80079) masqueraded as 80072 on a visit to Llangollen?

34105 was also turned out as 34102 Lapford towards the end of its last ticket which is its current identity, if you look at the cab numbers.

In reply to 46118, 76079 took on the identity of 76084 a couple of years ago. The occassion was a reunion of 24D Lower Darwen footplatemen, which took place at the ELR.

What a pity there isn't another A3 extant that could stand in as "Flying Scotsman", and save all that expense.....

    I'll get my coat....

Didn't the GW/R run 30926 Repton as the NRM's 30925 Cheltenham for the official reopening of Cheltenham Racecourse station?

I believe 69621 ran with a variety of numbers over a weekend so that everyone could get a photo of their favourite N7.

I thought people were suggesting locos that have used identities of other preserved locos, rather than identities of scrapped members. 8-[

Didn't Odney Manor take the number of a 2-8-2T for an ELR gala? 8-[
