Now that's a cracking piece of reporting, and obviously well researched. Congratulations to the writer Robert Hardman, who professes at the outset to know nothing about railway preservation, but towards the end I began to suspect that maybe he is on the verge of catching the bug.:)
I love his comment that maybe it's we who should be running the national railway!!!

The Daily Mail is not my favourite rag either, but kudos to them for reporting one of the feel good stories of the year.

Who's off to Didcot again this weekend then? My Father and I will be back. There is now the added bonus of 70000 passing through on a Steam Dreams excursion to Stratford upon Avon.

Any ideas if the Railmotor will be on display prior the offical launch in May ?
Also will any of the static engines be out of the shed, that what let Didcot down last time (6023 launch) that once you'd pictured 23 and the mogual there wasnt much else to see.
Seeing as Ive been there 100's of times over the years. I'd would be nice to have them dotted about around the site.

Weather report reckons it will be 23c and sunny so should be a great day !

    Great Western.

What a fab day !!! We stayed until 1800, and I got some excellent pictures of 6023 & 6024 double headed outside the shed and lined up...One word - Spectacular !

    How about 6000 + 6023 + 6024 for the GWS 50 ????

Oh and now a life member of the GWS and have donated a few pound towards 7202 !.
Roll on May when the Railmotor is launched.

    Great Western.

    Morning everyone,

I can only echo the previous poster's comment - yesterday was a fabulous day. After the slight problems with 6023 that came to light the previous day, all present were greeted by both Kings being posed together, and later double-heading a two coach train! Lovely stuff :).

Some pics from yesterday (along with a host of other things) are here:-
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/bristol-re/

I did note, however, that perhaps something isn't quite right with 6024... whenever it ran past (forwards) there seemed to be more than a slight creaking of the rails from what appeared to be the leading wheelset, once every revolution. This sound did not occur with 6023. Did anyone else notice this? It's quite clearly audible on some of the videos uploaded too...

    Very Best Wishes,
    Bob.

I noticed this too. I'm no engineer but to my ears it definitely sounded out of sorts - only going forwards though. The loud creaking noise it was making - once per revolution - seemed to become more noticeable as the afternoon went on.

Anyway, yesterday was fantastic and great to see both Kings working together. Very symbolic and worth the visit.

I've seen two Youtube videos of the two Kings on the demo line and the "graunching" sound from 6024 with each revolution of the wheels is quite apparent. I wonder what it is? Hopefully, it's something easily fixable.
