Re: 6100 Royal Scot test runs

Whatever the case, its wrong to make comments on these pages based on hearsay and gossip.
Its quite apparant that some folk have worked damned hard on 6100 and it must be very dissapointing to read some of this cr==p on these pages written by so called experts who have gone nowhere near the loco.

It aso seems apparant that what ever the Southall lads do is wrong as there are obviosuly people (one especially )who has an large axe to grind!

If I was a bressingham trustee or indeed a volunteer at Southall I may just be thinking why did we bother??

    Its so easy to criticise!!

I think people are asking the wrong questions, It's not Whats wrong with the engine... its Why is this engine in this current position ?

    Clearly something has gone wrong,
In industry, if a customer pulls the plug on a vendor and moves to production to another vendor there have to be very sound business & financial reasons, the next step is obviously payment / contract and litigation to be resolved etc etc, and always the costs / penalities etc will increase considerably. Therefore for a contract to be pulled, there must have been a serious loss of confidence and a major risk to the project that became unacceptable.

Fortunately Crewe has gone all in for commitment to a deadline at no cost.. thats some serious goodwill being generated, (especially as revenue generating business has been probably been put to one side to complete the work) so obviously there must be a post mortem as to WHY it went wrong.

I find it quite amusing to read this and other posts, especially Stan the Man and his comment that '..it's wrong to make comments on these pages based on hearsay and gossip.' Isn't that exactly what he has been doing? Whoever Bongo is (and I don't know), he has good knowledge of what is going on at Crewe, Southall and elsewhere and doesn't post comment without substantial fact to support it. I do know that the guy has been around in the preservation game for more years than most and knows what he is talking about. He certainly isn't Kim or Pete, as Stan the Man intimated in an earlier post.
I've been away for the last few days, funnily enough , in Crewe, but I haven't been to see or been involved with 6100 or any other loco.

If we had to restrict our questions so that no-one would get offended then we wouldn't get very far in life would we? I see nothing wrong in what Bongo has suggested or intimated. Asking awkward questions is not a crime.

76079 - If your information is better than mine, I stand corrected. From what I've seen (and I'm no engineer, but have been involved with steam for 15 years), there's much to commend a lot of the work that's been done. It would be helpful if you could list some of the faults etc that you have seen.

Bongo - If the project leader decides on a particular course of action, it's difficult just to do it another way, whether you're a vounteer or (especially) a paid worker. But you're right, defending unsound practices is indefensible!

You said: "What I find surprising is that certain people on here who claim to have been involved in these projects, respond to comments on forums such as this, by saying that there's nothing wrong..." My understanding is that there is widespread acceptance among the Southall team that things have been done wrong, and a lot of disgruntlement over the way things have turned out.

I volunteer at the Centre and have done for many many years so im in direct contact with the people working on the locomotive, so you might go so far as to say i have an inside take on the situation.

I am limited as to what i can say publicly because i feel it neither my place and would betray the trust that others have shown me by sharing the facts with me(I also have to work along side these people at times so would also affect my working relationship with them). However im sure in the fullness of time everything will come out in the wash, it always does.

Im sure one of the magazines will probably print an "exclusive" at some point

whatever you may think of Bongo , heritage railway has a headline of Royal Scot Nationalised by loan , and who said on here first that the engine was plated with a loan to the bank ?

'Royal Scot Nationalised' - that's more than a bit of sensationalism. I mean, how many of us on here have houses that are 'nationalised' by a restriction in favour of their mortgage company on the title register...? Its essentially the same thing, security for a loan.

76079 - Matt, is it? - you have already made it very clear by implication that you have seen with your own eyes that the work on 6100 has been rubbish. So what harm would it do to give us some examples? Doing so wouldn't be betraying any trust; it would just be relating your own experience.

If there were any trust to be betrayed (by sharing the judgments of others here), you have already done it. So, again, what harm could be done? Come on, give us a few nuggets.

Re: 6100 Royal Scot test runs

I do wonder just how much of the work is "rubbish." If 6100 really was the wreck some posters here would have us believe, how come Crewe have steamed her so soon after taking on the job?
I've been speaking to a mate of mine who was working on her at Southall and he's pretty miffed at some of the accusations flying around. On the other hand he's not entirely surprised as in his experience there's always somebody who seeks to criticise the workmanship on some project or another.

Re: 6100 Royal Scot test runs

i dont think the voluenteers are the issue here, but the inflated costs, and issues to do with the management of the project are, how much did it cost to overhaul 70013? compare this to what has been spent on royal scot, its exactly the same as with flying scotsman, how much did that cost 1million pounds? ten years ago , 70013 was done to budject 6100 has over ran several times i agree with bongo, there are issues with the management behind southall , we used to say about scotsman , at ropley and the view of the staff were that it would not be any use if we hired it it for a week end because they wernt convinced that it would pass a fitness to run on our line , the fact that an engine has been steamed does not mean that its going to be a strong reliable engine , i dare say that the true nature of the restoration will be prooved over the longer period

    Save all the mud slinging.
At approx 15:45 today passed LNWR to see said "Royal Scot" with safety's lifting looking great. 15 mins later she was observed doing a small "loaded test run" - with Lizzie as weight, up and down the sidings.
    Great to see.

Re: 6100 Royal Scot test runs

If you must know, I understand the steam manifold was so fastened, it leaked badly through the flange, and when it was discovered the fire had to be immediately thrown out.

I don't think that is something that is nice to report, but as I have now heard about it from three very independant sources, you might as well know. It's also a warning to everyone out there that safety critical items must be checked by responsible people who know what to look for. These things can easily happen if there is no inspection. It's the sort of thing that could lead to a fatal accident.

Perhaps you'll understand now why there's apparently some scepticism regarding the quality of work undertaken. Honestly, I'd would have thought that anyone even slightly associated would be keeping a low profile instead of shouting from the rooftops about how great they are.
