Fred is right in that both 46115 and 45699 we total wrecks before they went to Carnforth, and Mr Smith surely did an excellent job on them, without frankly the facilities of a Crewe or Derby works.
As has been mentioned, Ian Riley's engines have a different history, so comparisons are un-necessary.

    Both organisations deserve credit.

As for 46100, I would suspect that Mr Hosking and his team have plans in place to deal with the engine in due course in the correct manner. Lets just hope the current storage conditions are not leading to undue deterioration.

In an ideal world a loco such as Royal Scot, which might be classed either as "famous" or at least "with a story to tell" should be cosmetically restored and on display in the NRM, until such time as a mechanical overhaul is forthcoming.

Jeremy Hosking seems to be gradually working his way through his collection. Let's not forget that he's also had a lot of unexpected work to pay for on Braunton, and is currently funding the overhauls of both 6024 and Port Line - in addition he's also heavily involved in the 5-Bel project, I believe. Even he probably doesn't have limitless pockets.

I agree completely with this sentiment in that any group that manages to get a locomotive up to a standard that allows it to run on the main line should be free from criticism over their ability to do just that. Clearly when you start from a broken jigsaw rather than a functioning locomotive then the work involved will be much harder, take longer and have the potential to throw up considerable obstacles. Carnforth, Crewe, Bury, Tyseley...etc - it is definitely not the easiest way to turn over a pound or two. But once any locomotive is operational, then the maintenance regimes are surely similar and demand the same meticulous attention to detail?

As for the consumer, who pays money to travel behind these wonderful pieces of engineering, all that is asked for is that on the day, what was rostered actually turns up and your day passes without mishap.

Time will tell over 46100 but the day it steams will be welcome, whenever it happens.

Spot on Al. And in this sector the reliability leaders are manifest which surely speaks volumes for their meticulous regimes.
One other point to note is that Riley's and Tyseley both undertake contract overhauls. Not sure that WCR do so in the same sense, probably because they have enough to do maintaining a fleet large by other standards. In this sense Riley's and Tyseley have operational adverts too.
Pretty sure that anyone lucky enough to be in a position to award a contract to overhaul their loco to main line condition would have Riley's in their top 3 and wcr wouldn't be.
WCR are of course pre eminent operations wise.

Which I think is manifestly unfair and a slur on the WCRC team; Riley's team concentrates on / specialises in steam locomotives; Tyseley is a museum geared to operating a dedicated local seasonal service (The Shakespeare Express) using its own rolling stock which it maintains plus a series of main line tours to more distant locations from its base at Tyseley whilst WCRC operates a hire business using coaches, diesel locomotives and steam locomotives maintained at Carnforth and running from Lands End to John O' Groats with extensive ecs workings in addition to its passenger carrying charters.
In fact looking at the 3 examples above ONLY WCRC has the workload that utilises a large work force and provides much employment in an area where good jobs are hard to find and even harder to enter. Given some of your "favourites" I wonder if you are simply trolling for the sake of it - as I doubt that few would either agree with your comments or the tone in which they appear to be belittling the efforts of Team Carnforth.

I actually think that there is little of substance that anyone with an objective view of things could disagree with in either #70 or #71 and I am sorry that my original post has opened up a running sore about one set-up, (who I think have nothing to do with the restoration of 46100!) That said, and sorry to disagree Fred, when you apply the focused template of loco reliability across the main line steam fleet, then the variations are obvious and this has had an impact on my bank balance so I feel entitled to comment. That said, I've no idea why this is the case and I wouldn't presume to guess. My hope is that 46100 benefits from continuing expert attention in her restoration and some special tlc when operational. This loco will be one to savour when we get the chance.

Plus it doesn't make sense to have all your locos in ticket at the same time.

I have to chuckle over this argument as to who is better than whom. Talking to a locomotive custodian only the other day and he was singing the praise of one heritage line as "they know what they're doing" yet another conversation with the engineering chief of another heritage line said his railway would never again contemplate hiring a loco from the same railway as "their engineering and maintenance standards are well below par." No doug both speaking as they find but just goes to show that not everyone has the same opinion about any one set up. Same with engineering firms. Loco owner A will praise company B but at the same time loco owner C will swear never to use company B again. Funny old world at times.

Fred, nothing I have said is remotely defamatory towards wcr. On the contrary, my post acknowledged the size of the task it has, as well as their pre eminent operational credentials. I have high regard for what wcr do in their many spheres of operation.
In this thread we have been specifically discussing reliability of working locos resulting from meticulous regimes. It is unarguable that Riley's locos have virtual 100% record for not breaking down; wcr are not at 100% yet. Based on those achievements if I had a loco due a heavy general it would be going to Riley's rather than wcr. It's a moot point anyway because wcr aren't in the business of contract overhauls to the same extent.
Hope I've been objective but it's a forum for expressing constructive opinions. Trolling? No. Neither do I have favourites, just a view based on facts and my assessment of them.

Hmmm difficult for armchair fans to moan at either, Riley, Carnforth or Tyseley. All,have made an incredible mark on railway preservation. It's easy to forget the money put into what we enjoy, the time of volunteer effort and the skill of the people involved; I doubt main line steam as we know it would be trusted by network rail without Smith, Riley or Meanley. Some can't be pleased I guess or perhaps would do a better job themselves

Expressing a personal opinion in favour of one body does not malign another. Nor could it be said to benefit one party nor be detrimental to another business.
Nobody has said any business is bad only implied that one has a better record than another. That does not infer the latter party is poor.

And lets face it, if WCR offered to reconstruct 6100 in exchange for a period of use would we not all be happy with that ? yes ! ( although the first time it failed there would be the usual ' wouldnt have hapened if so-an-so had done it' reeled out ad infinitum)

Given Rileys recent work load and everything else to do with another certain engine, would they want to do it? , Ian could well say" after what we found on the "other" one, thanks but no thanks" i would think that he would prefer not to have to set up frames hornguides and cylinders on any more engines for a little while its best where it is until JH decides its time to complete it, then, who knows, he very well might put it out to tender
