After nearly six and a half hours travel a decent break sounds like a good idea, and remember Mike with the traffic on that route you cannot just set off when you want, you have to fit into a suitable slot.

I'm not too sure that it will be be used as there is a booked stop at Abington on the outward journey 1718/58 and at Cartairs on the return 0933/1003. Both these locations are regularly used for watering but from the timings I have seen it is not clear what these stops are for. One thing that these timings do suggest is that the hoped for non-stop run between Carlisle -Glagow isn't going to happen. Distances from Carlisle, with Abington at 58 miles out and Carstairs 73 miles away would suggest that they are water stops and therefore I cannot see a need to take a water carrier.

It depends. We have to remember that the majority of customers are likely to be Joe public, who probably don't care one way or the other about the diesel. If you want the marketing angle: The operator needs to meet customer need while maintaining a business case for the product. If most customer's needs are met and the business case holds with a diesel on the back then so be it. Contrast this to a photo charter, where customer need would most certainly not be met with a diesel on the back, then its obvious: it stays off.

I was under the impression the water carrier was being used on this trip. On day 1 of Davids UK Steam timings, it does say 'may be subject to change', so who knows......Tysely have ripped up the Timing sheet before havent they!!!

Looking forward to the trip, regardless of what hapens.

So the timings for this one could go ahead or behind of schedule. If there is anyone who knows 6201 and crew, would you expect 6201 to be ahead of schedule. Hopefully no slipping this time at Tebay.

Until the day I experience Shap and Beattock, I really won't know what it is like.

Mike, since there are hourly Crewe to Glasgow services, plus 2 or 3 other services hourly on most of the route, and some freight as well, the path for 6201 is very limited, running either more than a few minutes ahead or behind time is not an option.

Sorry all, I have been too excited about this trip since it was announced. I wish I could travel overseas. It just was not an option. sad

I hope that isn't unreasonable. Don't mean to be spreading drama if I am.

Mike - Shap is seven miles and Beattock ten - they are impressive climbs northbound - but they are no Sherman Hill

You normally get a good run from Oxenholme to Grayrigg which gets the loco warmed up for the big climb - up to about seventy alongside the Lune to Tebay - its called the Lune Gorge - but not like anything of that name where you are from - its quite a wooded valley, then the climb to Shap summit

You will get a flying run at Beattock, but its not unknown for crews to brake as you pass Beattock village - don't know why, and the usual methodology is a steady measured climb to the top where you will probably be in darkness. Glasgow at 18.55 - so around 19.15 into your hotel and go and explore the city. It will be full of Saturday nightlife - but its as safe as houses and as comfy as old boots - so no staying in the hotel all night!

The following day its quite a leisurely run home and the banks are much longer and easily graded southbound. The weather looks OK - so enjoy yourselves - and don't look behind you!

The Banks Southbound may be longer and easier graded Frank. But one of my enduring memories of real steam days is on the circa 14.00 ex Carlisle going South behind a Brit. Wonderful, wonderful prolonged two cylinder "chomp" climbing Shap at close to 50. Left you wishing the summit would never come. I'll have to dig the log out, but I think that day the crew let the Britannia run nicely into the mid 80s going down the other side.

And I too wish everyone on board a great day out on Saturday with just the noise from 46201 to listen to!

Well if I have anything to be happy for at this point, I'm glad Lizzie is getting a well deserved overhaul at Tyseley starting this coming March. Frank I love the mountains my country has to offer East or West of here. I need to write a thread about myself in the this is me section. I think I shall do that.

Glasgow Central to Law Junction and Carluke is a particuarly challenging section of railway for a cold locomotive and the fireman. I'm sure a loco designed for the job will be more than upto it though.

Maybe save for next years jolly... Euston to Aberdeen steam both ways through out..
Hoping for 6201 to Crewe, 46233 to Glasgow, 60009 to Aberdeen, wcml out, s&c back.

As it sounds I'm quite keen for that.. Though its said it's dependant on an extension for 6201, but 46115 or 70013 would be good subs.

Well no Offense, I'm a very picky fan when it comes to what locomotives I ride behind. 6201 and 5043 are the locomotives with the qualities I love the most. They both have very loud firecracker exhaust. 6233 and 60009 are both great locomotives but they aren't the same cup of tea so to speak. So I hope there is a repeat of this trip or to Edinburg with Lizzy. However this Castle to Scotland tour next year looks very tempting to me.

Hi Mike, though your favourites may be 6201 and 5043 but travelling behind a Duchess over Shap is one of things you must try if you get the chance. Sadly I am working this morning so even though 6201 will be passing within approx 5 miles of my home this morning and tomorrow evening I won't get to see this tour.

Anyway, to all those travelling have a good trip and I hope the lovely clear autumn weather holds for those linesiding :thumb:

47773 reported to be taking only 8 coaches to Crewe. If it weren't for the diesel that would be some run with Lizzie and 9 on!
