And I was on that red brick overbridge at Hest Bank, not knowing until 30 seconds earlier that the train was running, so with Mrs C pulled on to the side of the road, I ran back to the overbridge, having seen the smoke in the distance - really lifted my day! Super pics Andrew, thanks!

There was some sunshine in the Lune Gorge and up Shap. The return run was nice and sunny in the Penrith area. Definitely better than forecast. Duchess seemed to be going well both ways.

Thanks for the kind words Anthony. Hest Bank is a favourite spot!

May I point out that my websites for 2008 and earlier years have a similar format to 2009's, and include mainline steam photos which may be of interest. (Steam on heritage lines is on my heritage railwebsite.) Go to

I travelled yesterday. A most enjoyable tour. Punctual, with hard work from the locomotive without it being thrashed to death. I overheard one of the support crew saying that they are in the business of getting fare paying passengers from A to B and back to A again, not breaking any records. A good northbound path too, with a clear run from Crewe (albeit on the slow line to enable a Glasgow bound Voyager to overtake) through to the water stop at Carnforth and onward there to Carlisle.

A wise and professional philosophy - and one that should be the fundamental for ALL operators.

Excellent photo there. Shame about the wires, but always been my favourite headboard on the LNWR together with 'The Caledonian'. Could normally trust both those services to run close to time in the early 60's when I started my steam enthusiasm

I know what you mean about new locations Ralph but there is plenty of interest in your shot which is well executed as usual. With Galgate becoming overgrown I was searching the Bay Horse area for something new but had to give up in the end though. I will try again. So the first shot is Galgate again but the second is a relatively new one to me taking in Greenholme, Scout Green and Salterwath from the west:-

That is the way it invariably goes from Crewe, Slow line to Winsford to let Voyager overtake, but this time there was a freight slipped in after the Voyager as well.

It didn't pass me at Golborne, possibly routed towards Liverpool or Manchester :-k Ralph phoned me to let me know that it was delayed just after Crewe due to the freight and I was set up at Golborne then.

Info leaving Crewe is thanks to Glynne at the Heritage Centre, always there to see them leaving. Ta... we all appreciate the live info.
