Yes she did and it was fixed pretty quickly at Castleton, I believe with the help of IR, and she ran back to Carnforth under her own steam only a few hours later.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Thanks, Ralph. I was pretty sure it was, & I've looked it up.

At least with a Brit it should be a lot easier than getting into the middle cylinder gland on the Scot :)

As a matter of professional interest, what packing materials are used these days on piston rod glands?

Depends on the loco/design of gland. Could be gunmetal, cast iron or white metal for metallic packings and probably woven graphited PTFE for soft packings.

Any news on how the remedial work is progressing and a projected date for further testing?

    Regards,

    John.

SG blew a LH piston rod packing on one of the Scarboroughs I was on. It was repaired in half a hour as the loco was watering at York. The fitter said it was made from cast iron.
If that's all with Brittania it will be an easy fix.

I suspected it was more involved than the packing ! otherwise it would have been fixed on the day.

Depends whether you have spare castings to machine up. Not everyone carries a set in their back pocket, just in case. However, other postings suggest that there was a lubrication problem, as well, which was probably the prime cause of the failure and may have led to a scored piston rod. I'm only speculating, though.

70013 has been replaced by 60007 on the Dec 3rd Cathedrals express, so no meeting even if 70000 is ready.

I think 70000 might make this but as for 70013 I've no idea how much progress has been made with it.

Regarding 70013, I've just posted an update from the 5305LA on a new thread, but they have withdrawn the loco from the rostered duties in December.

Looks like we will have to wait for the New Year to see 70000 and 700013 together.
