Lets hope the firebox settles down and is trouble-free.

Not reopening this particular debate, but I recall that the cost of repairing the original firebox was said to be about as expensive as building a new one.

Driving past Toddington on the B4077 from Stow yesterday and caught sight of Lord Nelson rolling quietly into Toddington with the 17-20 ex-Cheltenham.

Good to see the loco getting in the mileage it requires. Lets hope the firebox repairs settle down now.

This will be Nellie's last weekend on the G&W, according to their web-site. Then she's off to the GCR.

I heard a suggestion last weekend that 850 is out-of-gauge for some part of the Scarborough Spa Express route(*), so won't be included in the "York pool" this summer, which, if true, would be a great shame. I am really looking forward to comparing a Royal Scot with a Lord Nelson, since the Scots were based on the LN designs. (Maunsell lent the drawings to Fowler when the LMS urgently needed a new express passenger class.) Presumably, it's the same bridge on the Harrogate loop that caught 6233 last year. Does anyone know any more about this? I find it a little surprising that a Southern engine is out-of-gauge on a route that's OK for an A4, but there you go....

Edit: (*) Also mentioned on the GWSR loco roster page, which is good confirmation.

The original Scots maybe, but the "Rebuilts" were a very different beast.

The original trials of an urgently needed larger engine were in fact conducted by the LMS using borrowed GWR Castle class "Launceston Castle", but then Swindon would not lend the LMS the drawings for the "Castle" class.
As mentioned above the SR lent the drawings for the Lord Nelson class, and the North British Locomotive Company were asked to produce fifty locomotives as quickly as possible. Derby pursuaded NBL to go for a three cylinder design and use the valve events of the "Horwich" 2-6-0's. Although bearing a superficial resemblance to the Lord Nelson class, there was apparently a fair amount of Horwich input into the design.

As James mentions above, we are talking about the birth of the original Scots, and not the rebuilt design we know today.

If she's out of guage up north bring her back south where steam dreams would find use for her on several routes!

    The GWSR web site says
I'd like to be around the GCR when that "more vigorous 60mph running" takes place. There could be quite a bit of that coming up, with Tornado going there soon for the same reason. Of course, it can't happen when there are public services operating.

James & 46118 - I take your points about original vs rebuilt Royal Scots, and would like to know more, but I think we need a new thread for that...

See some of you at Toddington on Sunday, perhaps?

I wondered about the SSE as well, the steam Beano again said it would be returning to mainline action on them but as far as I was aware it was ruled as out of gauge for the loop shortley after the Duchess of Sutherland struck the bridge near Hornbeam park. Can anyone confirm this??

Almost every time that Steam Beano makes a prediction about something "exciting" about to happen on the main line, it changes just after they go to press. I used to think it was Old Wilcocks that was jinxed, but Young Streeter seems just as badly afflicted.

Thanks to all on the G&WR for running 850 on Saturday. Super weather and lovely clean rolling stock and 850 working without any ceremony.

Lets hope the next stage of testing on the GCR is fault free.

    Cheers, Neil

I would guess there are very, very many of us here who would agree to that comment.

If and when Nellie makes it on to the big railway, what is it doing for support crew? and what is it doing for a support coach?

Are the Eastleigh mob still maintaining custody?

Wasnt its original support coach given to Tornado and is at darlington seem to remember pictures of it there?

"Loaned" rather than given. It went to the NNR for safe storage, and was still there last I heard. I'm an armchair member of ERPS and nothing has been said to the membership about whether or not EPRS will remain custodians of 850. Personally, I'm hoping they do. Although Jesse Moody has stepped down from his official possitions, there are still plenty of knowledgeable people in the society. I guess the relevant people will be having discussions, probably round about now.

I know the answer is probably not but im going to ask the question anyway.

Would the NRM care to comment?

The ERPS put their heart and souls into restoring this engine on behalf of the NRM and the nation and now the time is getting ever nearer to Nellie returning to the big railway and they are still in the dark as to whether they are even going to be running it?!!!

    seems a bit unfair
