Yes, I was bar steward on Saturday on the dining train and Guard on the sunday, so I probably had the most haulage over the weekend, worked like a dream, awfully quiet thing though.

correct me if i am wrong, but i remember reading a interview with harry friff when the engine first returned to steam at eastleigh, when he stated that the engine would not be based at the mid hants because he was a volunteer in the early days and had fallen out with the management this dispite the fact that 828 is under repair by the urie group, with regular help from the eastliegh group once again it sounds like the old politics raising their head again

personally, i think that the mid hants would be the best southern base for her inbetween rail tours because of the back up that would be availible for her , ropley has the machining expertise and with the heavy gradients, it would soon find any weakness in her boiler a month of running tests would make sure she is fit for the main line

The second half of the first paragraph is complete rubbish Martin.

I am a member of the Urie group, and no way is Barry Stratton taking on the restoration os 828 for he has enough on his hands with 506 and ultimately the full restooration of 499.

What he might be doing is offering advice as it,s another S15. I suggest you come back to the Mid-Hants where of course you would be made most welcome and get your information first hand. You will see that an awful lot has changed.

    Best Regards
    Chris Willis

point taken, like i said correct me if i am wrong, i take it then that there is no co operation between the two groups then, i was under the impression from the beno, that both groups were working together, un fortunatly because of the long drive and cost i am in no position to return to the mhr, believe me, if i could i would,

anyway, how is 506 coming on, i would guess by the time it has taken so far the engine was in a worse condition than first thought which boiler will she be fitted with, because dont all three need a lot of work, i always thought that the one from 499 did not steam so well as the later maunsel type, so was it just me [-o<

Boiler 755 will be going onto the chassis of 506. Barry had had to do an awful lot of work on this boiler and has been advising the Maunsell Society at the Bluebell on theur S15 number 847 which I beleive has similar problems, so this puts Barry at the top of the ile for knowledge of S15 boilers.

"Stratty" estimates less than two years for this loco with 499 taking much longer as I understand there are two cracks in the frames that were "Bodged" in B.R. days.

Where do you live now that is so far away?, contact mw offline if you wish?.

    Regards
    Chris

828 is being worked on by Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society with occasional assistance from MHR staff. Refurbishment of the ashpan is complete and many boiler fitting have been refurbished. All tubes and flues have been removed and the inside of the barrrel cleaned. work is now proceeding on drilling out and removing cracked or wasted stays. Photos of the work occasionally appear on the MHR web site and some should be up on the ERPS site when I scan the slides.

    Regards, Neil

Not when its got a decent load on the back of it its not! The roar is out of this world!!!

Going back to your comment 73129, when was it confirmed that 850 is going to the MHR? Only thing that Ive been reading is that it might happen one day, we say it once again, the trials have to be completed first and then see what happens from there. It hasnt had its high speed test yet at the GCR.
