Beast, awesome and stunning - contenders for the most hackneyed words in the railway enthusiast's vocabulary?

(Closely followed by the general public in the case of the latter two!)

Thread locked and some posts moved whilst we look into some of the remarks...

OK concerns have now been settled with a posted apology so thread now reopened. The posts after the one in question have been omitted as they are no longer really relavent.

  6. The local press giving WD 90775 some publicity. http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/iron_horse_back_in_the_saddle_at_north_norfolk_railway_1_4722353

On a side note in the latest joint line No.171 mentioned there is nothing set in stone for this but a name for WD 90775.
    'Sgt Harry Cator, VC'
    Iron Horse
    Montgomery

For me if going to name WD 90775 what about
    54th East Anglia infantry Division,

Looking at some names of Vulcan foundry, Hunslet, RSH 0-6-0 loco's such as,
    Rennes
    Royal Pioneer
    Sapper
    Walkden
    Swiftsure
    Errol Lonsdale

The name 'Norfolk Regiment' as gone to these guys >http://www.norfolksteamloco.co.uk/

I don't mind loco names to much, as long as my £3.55 a month helps bring her back to steam. ( 2 years of support and counting)

Didn't this loco already have a name, 'Sturdee', though not carried for several years?

  10. Aye, when I first joined the 'Loco Club' they have a tag line of 'from as little as £2 per month, you choose where your money goes'. They do give you the option of £5 , £10 or other. 90775 probs be painted in black anyway! Sadly a seasonal job means money just dosen't go that far for a year.

My contribution to 90775 is nil, but I'm not claiming to be helping to "return it to steam". Yes every little helps and I'm not saying this chap's contribution isn't valued, I'm sure it is, and it sounds like he's contributing in whatever way he feels able to which is all anyone can ask, but keep things in perspective, this is an expensive business. It's not surprising a few of the earlier membership-based loco groups have called it a day, if these sorts of numbers are anything like typical.

My own contribution to railway preservation is... not for me to say really, nor especially relevant. I wasn't trying to start a pissing contest. However I will say that if cash is tight, you may be able to contribute far more in terms of 'net worth' by putting in the occasional stint as a volunteer instead.

  15. My friend,
Did you know from as little as £2 per month you can help support either B12, J15/Y14, Countess of Warwick Class (Wissington), WD 90775 or a class 31. And you don't have to be a member of the M&GN Society! With a few little benefit thrown in.
'Members receive a membership card and opportunities to see the locomotives they help to keep running being maintained through pre arranged tours of Weybourne workshops. There is also the opportunity for footplate and cab rides, which may be organised for members from time to time, subject to operational availability and permissions.'

Or if that doesn't take your fancy why not join one of the M&GN Society 200 clubs! '

Something for a new new years resolution! ;)

If 90775 is to be named I am in favour of 'Sgt Harry Cator VC'. To me it seems apt to name this rugged powerful war department engine after a service man (who according to wikipedia worked on the railways before signing up).

Interesting how it also mentions in the latest Joint Line about the possibility of a repaint in to WD colours at some point. Would this mean khaki green?

Your point is what exactly? The fact the society advertises for standing order donations from as little as £2 a month, shows they consider them useful. Ross's contribution may only be equivalent to a tin of paint now but it is continuing to grow and could in time represent a large sum of money.

I find your point to be rude and condescending.

    Sawdust.

One point about regular donations is that, although any individual could stop donating at any time, cumulatively having a number of people making regular monthly donations gives a degree of certainty of income, which in turn helps with planning future expenditure. Any fundraising effort will have a mixture of small and large ad-hoc donations, regular donations, maybe sales activity etc - I don't think any are to be decried. Certainly regular donations help give certainty of income to a greater extent than relying on large, but irregular, donations: in addition, some grant-awarding bodies take into consideration the breadth of support for a project when deciding whether to give an award, which is another reason why having a number of regular donors is helpful. So I'd say to Ross, more power to your elbow!

And talking of standing order donations especially the small ones of the mentioned £2, as Tesco were want to say in their adverts in the recent past; "Every little helps.........!" Could be all the donator could afford, so is not to be sniffed. Better to have Champers in a tin mug, than to have none at all:rolleyes::Nailbiting:;)!
