Have come to this discussion far too late to offer anything new and this may have been said already but...

Don't 9Fs have 5ft drivers? That alone will limit its speed to 50 and that's not particularly useful on the main line. (Referring here to the thread title).

Yes, I know that 9Fs have been recorded at speeds frighteningly higher than 50 but that was then; this is now.

6233 also clouted a bridge on the Harrogate loop as well, top corner of the firebox I believe.

.... and here's the evidence, 31/7/2007. As I recall a new housing development above the railway at Hornbeam Park had disturbed the drainage and caused the railway to move slightly out of alignment. DSCF1087_edited.jpg

some of that grime must be as old as the loco...
Think if miraculously a 9f or a development thereof was passed for mainline running you could apply for a derogation for 60mph as the design was relatively modern and clearly intended to run at that speed
Wasnt the Pocket Rocket allowed speed upto 60mph >?

Interesting anecdote this. I understand SVR engineers were concerned about what impact 1501 would have on their infrastructure when she was first restored, however, many of these fears have not materialised. She has proven to be a hugely popular performer over the last couple of decades and I have had a couple of pretty explosive runs behind her over the years! She can also pull anything you sling behind her and more. Yes I think she can be a bit lively on jointed track (!), but she is certainly more stable than people expected.
There were some concerns about water capacity for a while which limited loads during steam heat season, following a close call, but I think this is largely resolved now. Certainly not a haulage capability issue.
Sadly I have probably had my last run behind her for some time and at the recent gala there were no fireworks due to the fire risk situation.
