This has got me thinking, do auto-coaches have a DSD or "Deadman's" device, as per single manned multiple units or locomotives, to stop the train in the event of the driver having a cardiac arrest? Double-manning the lead cab with a second man is the obvious precaution if this equipment is not fitted, but during a trip to a gala a few years ago and almost all pictures have have seen of presereved auto-train working appears to show the the carriage as single manned.

I can't think of any auto - trailers which were fitted with a 'dead man's handle'. Remember there was always a 'passed fireman' on the footplate who could bring the train under control if the driver was incapacitated. As has been mentioned earlier it was not unknown for the fireman to be driving in response to bell signals from the leading trailer. I believe this was more common when propelling 2 GW trailers as the mechanical linkage sometimes made it difficult to open and shut the regulator. Ray.

The only existing locos where other members of the class were push-pull fitted would be the 3 Ivatt tanks, 84030 and maybe the F5.
