Oil lamp. It was used as the P. Way gang's main shunting lamp for 20 years and I have used it and been guided by it in all weathers. Shunting maybe thirty wagons in Eardington Siding on a rainy December night on the 1 in 100 gradient, it was crystal clear to me as driver. Using it, it had the added advantage of keeping your hand warm! I have restored it now, but still use it if I am on a night turn, however, I need a new burner as the ratchet on the wick adjuster has worn. Anyone know where I can get any?

For engine prepping in the dark hours, I use a LED head torch. It's brilliant and it leaves both hands free, one for cork, one for feeder. I bought a flare lamp off ebay earlier this year and I sometimes use it for fun, although self - immolation is a definite risk, particularly when underneath on a Stephenson Link engine!
