    If 46115 weren't a loco, it'd be a pocket battleship!

Ollie gets my vote - the ultimate noise machine.

Despite seeing Tornado in action several times, its just never hit the spot for me

I'd probably vote for Tornado if it were allowed to stretch its legs (a bit) at 90 mph. Or to borrow 60019's water tender and do a London - Edinburgh run with minimum stops (is that technically feasible or are there air/vac braking issues?). 60163 just seems a bit under-challenged at the moment.

    Technically feasable, both air braked.

Tornado, because of the interest generated within the general public, the sheer audacity of the project to build her from scratch in the first place and the way she simply goes about her work with no fuss.

Totally discounted Tornado. All new build, and I don't take that way from the people who put the project together. But for me making a silk purse out of a sows ear by taking very old locos and making them majestic again is true skill and worthy of more praise. Of the selection in the poll, for me it has to be Scots Guardsman

For me its Tornado because of the performances and the way that the A1 Trust publicises it in the press as well as what they've done for the preserved movement altogether. Also for being he only thing moreorless running in Kent before Christmas.70013 Oliver Cromwell comes second and close behind is 46115 Scots Guardsman.

Don`t forget that some new-builds are NEW because there was nothing left to restore. Check out www.82045.org.uk . The idea is that an all new "workhorse" will take some of the pressure from the "oldies".

Agree with you about Scots Guardsman!

With you all the way on new builds like 82045 and it is acredit to those dedicated people who put the time, money and effort in. However when you look at what some of the restorers started with and how they brought the loco's back, it is truly remarkable. Utilising what was left and fashioning replacement parts must be a craft.

I agree, but it's the quality of the restoration that we're talking about here. And for that reason alone 5043 got my vote.
After all how many other 'Barry Wrecks' were bought to use as spares and ended up as a top class restored mainline performer?

Oliver Cromwell for me. Entirely because it was the first steam loco I saw close up as a kiddy in the early 70's, the image of size and power impressed me and started my interest in Locomotives of all types.
