Now being pedantic.. if BR was a government entity, and the NRM was... then any steam locomotive on the mainline from the national collection is a national asset operated by the national operator.. it's all just govt departments...

National Collection steam locos to have run on the main line : 850, 4468, 5000, 4771, 6000, 790, 70013 and 92220 spring to mind. Not sure if 46229 is owned by the NRM or on long term loan. If Shildon and Rainhill cavalcades are included then add 990, 925, 673 (aka 118) and 5 (aka Shannon). Any I've forgotten?

I think 92220 was still owned by BR until 1975 would that count? Pedantic I know I do apologise.

Thought Lion was Liverpool Museum or is that part of the same government department as NRM?

I think the real answer is what was known as the Class 13.

    6 locos sharing 3 numbers.

Thanks. Should have remembered the first three as I've seen/travelled behind them on the main line.

the question been answered but only diesels/electrics owned by BR in the seventies qualified. All answers including kettles are wrong

"During the 1970s BR had two locos running with the same number for a few years...how come?" Is what I said (and given the section this is in), how does steam come into the picture?

I thought we'd established this as being the diesel potting shed vs a peak...
