This AGM could be quite an exciting afternoon with all that has been happening this last 12 months. I am gutted that I will be missing it again due to clash of meetings on the day.
There seems to have been bits of news appearing in different places recently so the AGM will bring everyone up-to-date, I hope.
I am suprised that there has not been a mention on the website about David Buck's sad demise, we will be looking for another Patron, again.
If anyone doesn't know, the AGM is 2.00pm on Saturday 12th at CTL Seal, Sheffield with stall, eats and drinks and the 'Hengist' to inspect in all his glory.
ALL are welcome, members only can vote. (Join as you come in!!!!)
Ian tells us there will be something special on show, any guesses?

For those who could not attend the AGM, and indeed all those interested in progress with HENGIST, the next chance for all to view the locomotive, chat with the team, and hopefully become a member on the day if you are not one already, will be the 12th of April 2025. This will be the next Open Day at the works, CTL Seals' premises in Ecclesfield. More details will be provided nearer the time, but it suffices to say there will be lots to see besides HENGIST on the day.

This photograph was taken of the trial assembly of the front bogie, which was on display at the AGM. The springs are lower than in the final assembly as we do not yet have the correct cotters to set the spring height on the vertical spring links. Next time, come and see for yourselves...

IMG_8695.jpeg Funding appeal - sponsor the motion components and bring the loco closer to completion.

Lots to choose from, for all budgets, I’ll be treating myself for my 70th next spring.

I am very tempted to have a reasonably-priced personalisation done not in my own name, but that of a now-departed dear friend who was a supporter of this project.

What a splendid gesture. Also possibly an angle worthy of further development by such organisations?

I have already done something like this. I have agreed to sponsor all six driving wheel crank pins. These will be known as the AMA crank pins. My grandsons are Arthur, Michael and Alfie, hence AMA. This means that they have had a part in the construction of HENGIST and will be a legacy that they can talk about and show friends in years to come.

So if anyone else wants to do something on similar lines, please get in touch. We would love to hear from you.

I’m about to select a choice item to commemorate my 70th, so that’s inspired me to dedicate it our two train-mad grandkids:)

Such is my belief in the professionalism of this project that I’m also aiming to take out Life Membership, when the Mem Sec gets back to me.

For those that aren’t aware, Life Membership is on offer right now at £400 until the end of Jan, when it will increase to £600, a well worth giving some thought to fellahs.

Just seen the latest update. Very exciting!

And that tommy bar on the top of the frame space has to be the longest I've ever seen (I may have lead a very sheltered life...)

Also, thinking further on bolts, what is the reason why there isn't an air-driven rattle gnu with a preset torque to do all those bolts up? Would seem somewhat easier.

Latest status for you. The big push is to get the frames complete for the next Open Day in April. This means complete up to the motion brackets which we are calling phases 1 and 2. We can't finish the area in front of the motion brackets as we may need to remove the smokebox saddle when drilling the cylinders - this is all under discussion. The bolts for the dragbox and brake hangers are on order. Once these are fitted, we can rivet the hind beam. For a couple of nuts in the firebox support stretcher, Keith is designing a crow foot spanner head as we can't get a socket on the 1-1/4" nuts. The Monday gang are cleaning the frames - the main work so far has been ensuring that the welding for the hornguides is smoothly faired into the frame plates. The outside is awaiting inspection and there's probably a couple more weeks work to finish off the inside. Ashley has been steadily working along the frames with other members of the Monday gang cleaning, preparing and painting.

BikerMike - CTL Seal have loaned us an air driven rattle gun before when we fitted the somebox saddle (with temporary bolts). For the 6 bolts on the pivot bracket, it wasn't worth dragging it all out. If you think the tommy bar was long, you should see the long torque wrench that CTL Seal loan us. We did the 1-1/8" nuts the other day and it took 2 of us to operate it when positioning forced us to work upwards. I've still got to check the 1-1/4" nuts and I'm not looking forward to it!

John has now got a set of data for the bogie frame dimensions - from the Faro arm check, see news section. The next job will probably be to fit the frame keeps. This will be a proper fitting job to remove small amounts of material to ensure that the axlebox guide liners are truly parallel.

We are very close to placing orders for the coupled wheel axles and tyres. We are in final discussions with the supplier. Keith is working on the casting drawings for the cannon box and Alan delivered a set of 2D drawings for the cannon box internals last Monday. Unfortunately, unlike the bogie axle bearings, the coupled wheel bearings are not off-the-shelf. Timken have the drawings and they can be made to special order. Unlike, the Britannias which had a larger diameter centre driving wheel axle, the Clans have all 3 axles of the same diameter. The coupled wheels are work in progress at William Cook. They have a busy workload at the moment but we are hoping to have something to shop at the Open Day. An order has been placed for the modified hind cylinder cover which will support the front of the slidebars - as recently introduced by 71000. The pattern should be nearing completion and casting is scheduled for February.
