This locomotive is being overhauled on the Great Central and its boiler has been to Tyseley for repair. This is now back at the GCR, having had new steel around the bottom of the outer firebox and 2/3rds of the backhead. The smokebox has been removed and new steel welded to its lower 1/3rd.
The boiler bands are being painted and the superheater tubes are ready to be installed.
This should be the next locomotive to be returned to service on the GCR.

Here is a picture of the chassis three months ago - virtually all complete.

DSC01540s.jpg Work on this locomotive has concentrated on getting the boiler accessories ready - crinolines etc. The boiler has a 2/3rds new backplate and new steel plate, welded into place, lower outer firebox. The superheater tubes are awaiting fitting. The tender has been rubbed down ready for repainting. It is hoped to have the locomotive finished for Sept/Oct so that all three GCR Class 2 engines can be running at the same time.

Work has continued on the boiler with some cladding plates attached. There were many boiler backhead fittings in place and it appeared to be connected for hydraulic testing.

78019 came out into the sunshine today at Loughborough.
    DSC01739.JPG DSC01740.JPG

It still needs the superheater tubes (Flues?) fitting, the bare header can be seen inside the smokebox......then the boiler can go back on the frames as most of the cladding etc has been prepared.

I believe the boiler is now back in the frames and so it must be nearly ready for service for the Autumn Gala?

The boiler was indeed put back in the frames a little while ago. Believe the tender is now fully painted, unless it needs a top coat of varnish but the emblem is now there. Still a bit of work left to do, particularly around the fittings and pipework on the boiler. The Shed facebook posted today on some of the progress to date: " the new main steam pipes have been bent up, the next job it’s cutting to size and getting the ends welded on before they can be fitted. Rob has been fitting the clacks and injector pipe work. The cab has been rubbed down and is ready for undercoating. The loco and tender have been split so the main draw bar can be fitted and all the intermediate bags can be linked up once back together."

Won't copy across their photos but the group can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/GCR-shed-works-loughborough-134689309889540/ (I think it doesn't require a login from my quick test in a non-logged in browser).

The state of 78019 today.....Lots done, but lots still to do. The main item being a new steam pipe which has been bent but needs new ends welding on. It is still hoped to be ready for the Autumn Gala at the end of this month.

Is the G-clamp coupling engine to tender a permanent feature?

They have contractors in to refurbish the shed roof along with a lot more work in the shed.

Apparently the main steam pipe has been awaiting welding using a coded welder, hence the slightly delayed completion. It has been deleted from this weekend's Autumn Gala.

78019 is now back in service and has been hauling trains over the past couple of weeks on the GCR. I'm not sure if we did get the sight of all three Std 2 engines (78018, 78019 and 46521) in steam together.

It would be difficult to see three Std 2s together unless you hired 78022 as 46521 is the earlier Ivatt design ;)

Very true about 46521 being an Ivatt design - but the BR version is about 95% Ivatt design ...However I should have said "3 class 2 engines together" to be strictly true :(

If you can hold off for a bit, the Bluebell's 84030 would make it 3.
