On many older locos, each individual auxiliary steam supply (steam heat, electric generator, brake ejector, lubricator etc) had its own isolation valve. If you had a major leak, you'd have to fight your way past a potentially scalding jet of steam to try and isolate the supply.

On a Bulleid, all the auxiliary steam supplies come from a single manifold. If there was a fault, potentially filling the cab with clouds of steam and you couldn't reach the individual isolation valve, all the supplies could be quickly isolated in one go via the external manifold valve.

There is a photo (not mine) here: The Footplate of 34059 West Country and Battle of Britain Class 'Sir Archibald Sinclair' | Flickr - Photo Sharing! showing the manifold within the cab, and the individual shut off valves.

On a rebuild maybe, but on a Spamcan you'd need an extending ladder, or climb over the cab roof from the tender to access it!

Manifold isolation valve is in the same place on a rebuild as on an original, top front left hand side of the firebox. Would be fun to try and access it while the loco was on the move. :)

On Saturday Manston made its first moves since failing last October and subsequent major work on the valve gear, doing a short run around Swanage station limits. It has moved short distances again over the last few days and running in continues, to be followed by a complete repaint.

It is worth noting that Manston has now been fitted with a set of steam operated firehole doors, which we believe make it the only operational Bulleid to currently be so fitted. For all the horror stories, they are great fun to use!

And your shovels! I think 34067 has the small piston valve controlling the doors fitted, but its probably manual use on the mainline.

As I understand it, the system on '67 is incomplete; 34070 is the only one currently with the door system functional.

Wells had proper working doors back in the late '70's IIRC

Hopefully it will again soon...they're such fun every loco should have them fitted!

It would be an interesting thing to see on the SLL shareholders' footplate ride days on 34070.

I had a go on 34070 the day before it broke last October and they weren't working then.

Thats because they have been fitted whilst the loco has been in Herston works since October.

I had a play with them a couple of weeks ago and they definitely work now :)

Not sure if there is a separate thread for this loco, but there is a bit in the latest SR about 35018. It seems it is going to be restored in it's own right (rumours said parts off it were going to be used to restore 35009?). Seems work is going to start when 45699 is finished, not too far off by all accounts. What does come to light is West Coast's vail of secrecy, even the staff have been gagged from speaking externally. To quote JS loosely, "people will told what we are doing once it's done". Not very public spirited in my book & not the the way to gain public support, especially regarding contributions etc.

If this is another David Smith owned project then I doubt very much he'll be looking for contributions to the costs. Thus he has absolutely no need nor obligation to tell us anything. Frustrating it may be but that's the way it goes sometimes.

    45699 is nearly finished
    35018 will start next.
We are not paying for it.

When I was talking about contributions, I was talking about Carnforth projects in general, not just 35018. Most similar organisations have collection boxes. I suppose in this case you will have to climb the 20 foot electrified barbed wire fence & dodge the machine gun towers & searchlights.

Unless I'm mistaken the work at Carnforth is either a contract job for a third party who will be financing the job by whatever means they have chosen or a job for WCRC itself that will be funded by themselves as part of the business model they have. I don't think collection boxes come in to it somehow.
