Well my 34088 213 Squadron has a black background. So I guess that a black background is pretty common.

You ask this same question every time a Bulleid appears with black plates.

Both are authentic. The originals were blue, but in BR days they became black, and eventually back to blue again. It's another Bulleid minefield to find exactly what locos carried what colour and when, as there was a lot of unofficial repainting at sheds, using whatever paint was to hand. Some were even red! Eastleigh works also continued to outshop locomotives with black plates long after the official colour had returned to blue.

Ironically, after so long of it just being Tangmere and nothing else, we'll soo be awash with Southern engine son the main line. 35028 has the VSOE cornered (bar special guest appearances by engines like Tornado), so that leaves 777, 850 and 34067 to fight it out for the regular slots. Adding a Merchant to that will diminish the pot for the other engines, unless more tours are run.

Having said that, Tangmere has been popular and in demand over other regions metals (notably NE with trips to Ely and GWR on the Torbays), maybe something like this might suit them better, especially given that they aren't "tied" to south London in the way someone like the 35028 group are. It would be a shame to see it leave the SR, but it's not as though we've seen little of it for the last few years! That would effectively leave any Merchant to take over Tangmere's slot as it were.

What options do we currently have for Merchants to run on the mainline?

35005 - Canadian Pacific is out of ticket.
    35006 - P&O is currently being overhauled.
35009 - Shaw Savill (Nothing planned so far)
35010 - Blue Star (Still awaiting restoration)
35011 - General Steam Navigation (Still awaiting restoration)
35018 - British India Line (Nothing been done since she left the MHR to go to Portland)
35022 - Holland America Line (Last time I heard anything , she was being used as a donor for 35027 - Portline) Any other news on this one?
35027 - Portline (Currently being overhauled)
    35028 - Clanline (Mainline Running)
35029 - Ellerman Lines (NRM - Doubtful to ever run again)

So all in all - Not much progress with these wonderful locos - Be good to see a couple of others overhauled.........

Given that Clan Line is virtually exclusive to VSOE, it is therefore out of reach of many. There seems to be a desire to ride behind a MN so I guess that there would be a demand. Whether the financial case would stack up, I very much doubt.

I am sure there will be work for ANY class 8 loco. Be it a MN or A1.
Of course the owners will never recover their restoration/ overhaul/ new build costs, but if they can afford it - why not?

I hear Roland is getting things in line for Port Line's overhaul to be accelerated when Royal Scot is done.

You might want to check your facts a bit 34007...

For a start an appeal has been launched for 35010 "Blue Star" to repair her cylinder.
With 35009 "Shaw Savill" its not exactly unknown that if Ian doesnt sell her by the time the black 5 is ready, she will be their next restoration, and apparently will be turned out in BR blue.
And where is 35025 "Brocklebank Line" on your list? She is slowly being restored...
I also thought the owners of "General Steam Naviagtion" were in talks about her being restored?

Sorry completely forgot about 35025 - Brocklebank Line....
As for facts, this was always going to be open to any facts/opinions. I am just going by what I last heard... Albeit it some of them sometime ago.
I did hear about 35010, but so far nothing else has been done has it?
I didn't hear about 35009 - Shaw Savill. Ian obviously kept that one quiet!?

The appeal for 35010 was launched only a month or two ago, and the info on 35009 was in Oct/Nov's SR, though i already knew about Shaw Savill before i read about it.

P&O is certainly a slow process? Is it down to funds or workforce? I saw her about 3/4 years ago now and she looked pretty much there - Obviously since the boiler has gone off to Chatham I think?

Which Merchants could be a possibility to go mainline alongside Clanline and Portline?

Throwing my two cents into the option: What about unrebuilding General Steam Navigation or one of the other lesser known merchants out there.
Of course it is a hell of a lot easier said than done but i imagine quite a few bulleid fans wouldn't mind seeing a merchant in unrebuilt condition. I mean out of all the projects out there it would be one of the more interesting ones and offer a unique example of the class that would not be so heavy as the rebuilt version.

There was a proposal some years ago the "un rebuild" a Merchant. I forget which one but IIRC it was turned down then on the grounds of cost. I'd love to see a proper MN hurtling down the SW main line in BR blue.
