does anyone know how far away from steaming 35018 actually is now, she cant be that far away, assuming she is still being worked on.

Sorry to be cynical, but 35018 is at Carnforth, you know.

CRRES probably has its work cut out with running maintenance such is the size of the fleet.

I'm intrigued as to why it can be assumed that it is close to being finished. Although partially restored from Barry condition at the Mid Hants it spent many years there in open storage and then a few more in the sea air at Portland. I'd have thought that much of what had been done at the Mid Hants had probably have been undone by the time it reached Carnforth and that consequently it would be almost a case of starting again.

Less likely to wear out as there's no hammer action to destroy the loco.:)

The next step is to build a completely new Bulleid firebox and boiler barrel. Then there's no reason (apart from chanes in environmental legislation or a coal deficit) why they can't run for another (nearly) 75 years. As for 35018, it'll emerge when it emerges, but the suggestion that it was well-advanced has done the rounds and has emanated from some interesting quarters, with work primarily focused upon the boiler.

There were rumours that Galatea was "almost finished" for many, many months before it actually was, though!

na thats reserved for Tangmere next time she gets a 10 yearly :) suppose if its another couple of year, they could send 18 to crewe le pick up her sister 28 then both work down to Stewart’s lane at the head of a railtour if a way can be found for both West Coast and DBS to work together

When 28 gets stripped down for overhaul, it will be very interesting just how many merchant navies make up this engine, as she was purchased straight out of service from BR, I would expect that in her later days parts would have been taken from others to keep 28 in traffic, oR on withdrawal and sale to provide spares also if you can list at least 1 part of any MN that stil servives not counting tenders, do we still have the entire class, even if its just an expansion link extant today?

Parts got swapped around on a regular basis. 34081 had bits from all manner of Light Pacifics and she was an early(ish) withdrawal.
