I think what he means is that the majority of the survivors were not chosen for their individual qualities, or "celebrity" names, but simply because they were the ones that got sent to Barry or were the only ones left by the time the few groups had gathered together enough cash.

In that case don't forget that many went to yards who cut them almost as soon as they came through the door and IIRC at one stage the contract of sale from BR to the scrapman forbade the resale of the loco to a third party.

Thanks James - That is what I was referring to.....
There obviously was some better locos compared to some that are running today from what I have been told by ex-Southern Steam crews!

Maybe so but if the "better" locos ended up at Cashmore's or Buttigieg's they ended up as razor blades might fast so no chance for any realistic rescue attempt.

I've always wondered whether the plans for the Bulleids were taken from the drawing office at Eastleigh during the 1970s (in a possible clear-out), or whether they are all archived at the NRM...

A large number of Bulleid pacific drawings are in the NRM's drawings archive.

So when locomotives such as 34016 were running in the late 1970s, it was the NRM that provided the details for overhaul/restoration?

An update on the Battle of Britain Locomotive Society shows that they are waiting for Lottery funding for the overhaul of 92 Squadron! Page can be seen here... http://www.92squadron.co.uk/ > Go to the latest news update section.
Does anyone think with the way the country is at the moment that they will get the Heritage Lottery Grant for the overhaul of this loco?

So, chaps, what's the bet on the Bulleid locomotives at the Eastleigh 100 gathering? They currently have 34007, 34070, 35005 and hopefully 35028 chalked up for attendance. Does anyone think they may have any rebuilt Light Pacifics attending? I believe that there will be a further update on 4 March, but its nice to dream about the interesting photograph that could be achieved with a brace of Bulleids standing in a row (ie. more than on my avatar!)...

Clan Line will be there, albeit briefly, on Saturday. She's hauling "The Eastleigh Centenarian" from Victoria for Past Time/UK Railtours. Outward trip via Andover, return via Havant, Guildford and Leatherhead. I don't think there's any plan for her to return on Sunday or Monday.

Is there an Eastleigh 100 thread already? Ought to be in the Galas & Events section....

Would be good if 34016 could attend as well - Would help the MHR towards the future restoration?

I swear when i looked at the lineup a couple of months ago 34016 was listed as attending and 35005 wasnt. 35005 must have replaced her and she is probably better suited out of the two, she was built there!

It is a shame the only remaining Eastleigh built "light" wont be making it though!

Well, as the question is specifically about Bulleids only, and not about any other class of locomotive that may or may not be in attendance, then I think its just as valid to discuss it here.

They could send the cab down to Eastleigh(!). It would mean 34101 is there in spirit if not in totality!

....neither did 34023 Blackmore Vale in SR/BR service.

I was most disappointed that my first-ever WC, 34094 Mortehoe, which I copped on a Warwickshire Railway Society special at Doncaster, in 1962(?) did not have one either!

So that means only 34007, 34010, 34016 and 34092 have crests out of the WCs. I believe 34007 and 34016 have similar crests, however, showing the arms of the Duchy of Cornwall.

Wasn't 34027 (Taw Valley) rebuilt at Eastleigh?

I did notice that mate - But I thought I would mention some others.... Either Built or Rebuilt.

Shame 34016 "Bodmin" isn't attending alongside 35005. Okay they would be stationary, but will give anyone/everyone a chance to get up on the footplate to make comparisons between them both...

As far as I can tell, all rebuilding work was undertaken at Eastleigh, as Ashford was closed, and Brighton was in the process of winding down when the rebuilding programme began.

I agree that all the rebuilding was done at Eastleigh, but I thought Brighton closed before Ashford. When did Ashford close?
