Yes indeed Al; and Brian Smith from the Brighton Loco testing section was also on the footplate that day, and I was on the footpath at Wimbledon, my photo below.

Seems very rare in preservation to see see any Bulleids with Devon Belle regalia and 34081 does looks fantastic.

Edit: Just seen the post from the East Lancs Facebook and they believe it's the first time in preservation that full Devon Belle regalia has been carried by a loco.

A good example of when two colours go together well.

Despite the fashion statement of "red and green must never be seen"... :D

I am certain that this is a preservation first.

And by happy coincidence the red and yellow of the Devon Belle regalia match the squadron colours of 92 (F) Squadron RAF.

Looking rather fine, and would have certainly been a colourful sight in the post-war gloom.

It seems odd that the full Belle regalia hasn't previously been fitted in preservation, but might it be because of a lack of appropriate fixtures on the deflectors? I note from archive photos that several originals pre-21C169/34069 have a strip along the top of the deflectors (possibly for the purpose of attaching the wing plates?), but not all of them - 34051 currently has them, while 34007 did have them, but doesn't now. I guess there's also the preponderance of BR green livery.

The last and only time I had a run behind 249 squadron was a long, long time ago on the 1.00 pm Waterloo to Plymouth between Woking and Salisbury. The leg from Woking to Andover was non stop and we ran the 42 miles in a very tidy 43 minutes. Somehow I think that 34073 isn't going to turn a wheel again and if it does it won't have much of what pulled me inside!

A question that probably fits into the bleeding obvious category, but are the protrusions on the air-smoothed locos either side of the smoke-box for smoke deflection?

Getting spammed at Bolton Street. 34081 waits with a train from Heywood to Rawtenstall while 34092 departs with a Bury to Ramsbottom shuttle. IMG_2673.jpeg

We had planned for 34081 to carry a Devon Belle headboard on the Sunday of Strictly Bulleid 2, indeed we had a generous loan of a suitable headboard, however sadly due to 34081 failing it was unable to happen. It was actually diagrammed for a couple of trips on the set with Car 14 so there would have been the rare opportunity of a photo of the headboard through an original Devon Belle observation car.
