Looked and sounded to me like a bad case of priming.

In response to Kent Yetti's comments on Gordon Porter's speed attempts on the 20.51 arrival on Nov 18 1966, he was also busy earlier that week.. On the 16th he also had Merchant 7 on the 2051 with the same load - 11 and the same late departure from Soton. We had a signal stop for four minutes outside Eastleigh and he took us steadily up to Worting and was brought down to 5 mph outside Basingstoke. We then went through Basin at 38 but were up to 98 by Fleet with 86 at MP 31 and 90 just after before signals at Brookwood for a diversion onto the local, picking up the main again at Woking. The run in to London included 83 at Esher but a signal stop at Wimbledon. So we were late into Wloo. So despite the speeds it would have been a frustrating week for him, courtesy of the network - nothing new there then. Alan

I'm sure the last up working for a MN was 35030 Elder Dempster Lines on the 9/7/67

Hmmm, that makes the run with Clan Line that bit more special.

The last up and down channel Island boat train was with 35023 Holland Afrika Line. The last run down to Weymouth was on Friday 7/7/67 and the last up trains run on Saturday 8/7/67.

I think the last up departure was behind 35005 on Saturday 18 May 2002. This run took place after quite a few unsuccessful attempts to run tours behind MNs to or from Weymouth. These were cancelled mainly because of loco availability issues. One of these would have featured 35005+35028 working both ways on Saturday 27 January 2001, but sadly in the event both engines were unavailable for reasons I can't now recall.

now that would have been a sight two MN's in steam at Weymouth whats the chances of ever being able to try something like that again? but would clan line still be in ticket by the time crewe get port line out, unless riley beats them to it with his one, if he decides to restore it

I was under the impression the question was referring to the late 60s. The next possible arrival and departure for a MN from Weymouth will be 08/05/10 when 35028 Clan Line is on a rail tour from Waterloo via Yeovil and back up the LSWR main line to Waterloo.

I must admit that I was thinking that no MN had made it to Weymouth since 67, seems Can Pac slipped under the radar. I'm booked on Clan Lin's run in May and very much looking forward to it.

35023 also worked down to Weymouth on the 8:30 from Waterloo on 8/7/1967.

35030 worked all the way from Weymouth to Waterloo on 9/7/1967.

Hello all. I'm new on here. Last I heard, Ian Riley was going to restore 35009 Shaw Saville once he'd finished 44871. Does anyone have any news on whether or not this has in fact happened?

Well I haven't heard any news on 35009 yet, but Ian's doing a quick boiler overhaul on 45407 which will be finished by April. After then, who knows?

The best thing to do is join his forum and then ask him.

It would be pretty good going if 35009 was finished when 44871 is only just out the door!!

Ian has already listed his plans on 'The Works' regarding 45407 and 35009

I would join 'The Works' to see what these plans are but there's nowhere to register!
