I'm hoping to see 34007 & 34105 running together. Lets hope both locos stay in the same direction and then we could have some double heading.

Re:34007. Has the borrowed leaky tender from Boscastle, now been returned to the GCR, or is it still at the MHR?

Anyone know how long 34007 is likely to remain in maintenance ? Looking forward to seeing her in steam again !

This month's Steam Railway reports that 35018 British India Line has been purchased by Ian Riley and will be restored over the next 18 months using the frames of 35009 Shaw Savill (and will run as 35009, is the impression I get from the article) Once 35009 is operational 35018's frames will be restored using components from 35009.

Oh and the most important bit, IR hinted at painting 35018 black! Somebody get to Bury and confiscate his paint brushes!

You have just beat me to it, just read the article & was finding the appropriate thread on here to post it.
Seems like the 35022/27 story, a bit of mix & match. I think I am right in saying that a loco's identity is taken from the frames.
Just to add, I thought 35018 was partially restored when it was at the MHR. Not sure how far off completion it was though.

Strange, i would have thought 35018`s frames were in a better shape than those of 35009, considering the former loco was part restored at the MHR.

To my knowledge 35009`s frames have received little to no attention, but i could be wrong.

Also i thought JB had purchased 35018 BIL from its previous owner?

Perhaps he has sold it on. But their seems to be some mysterious paper transfers of ownership over the years of this particular loco.

A return to steam of any Merchant Navy will be welcomed in my opinion, regardless of who owns them and what identity they end up as!

About 12-18 months work to complete, it was said at the time the loco left the MHR.

Obviously spending the best part of a decade in the open at Portland, will not have helped, but also 35009`s frames were sat in the open exposed boilerless at Swindon for a number of years.

Heck of a lot of parts-swapping going on there, but it makes economic sense, as one will earn a crust whilst the other is being restored. Either way, I'm glad Mr. Riley's seen the light and has become a Bulleid fanatic ;)! I may even get round to liking the BR black livery...

Maybe 35018 was what Ian had up his sleeve when 35027 moved up to Bury. I thought he said the only thing better than a Black 5 was 2 Black 5's and he now seems to have 2 Merchant Navy's.

The article mentions that as well as 35018 being outshopped in BR Black 35009 will be outshopped in BR Express Blue. I quite like those ideas. A BR Black Bulleid will be interesting to see and 35005 suited BR Blue back in the Late 90's/Early 2000's so it should look equally good on 35009. Nice to have some variation. 35018 is set to be in steam 2-3 years after 35009.

it makes sense actually 35018 has a good boiler and most of its parts, not to mension an already restored tender (it ran behind 34105) the frames of 35018 have already been restored but the wheel sets might need testing, whee as the ones off 35009 have been tested and are ok , one reason behind this purchase might be that its getting harder to path his black 5s on some routes and as MN's are passed for 75 it may proove usefull to have a fall back loco plus theres the rarity factor and im sure will be very sort after up north its not that common to have an MN flatten shap being an 8p its more than capable of hauling anything you might wish to put behind it too , i bet WCSR would have loved to had an MN availible to hire last year when it had to use black 5s limited to 60 down the south when tangmere and cromwell were out

I just did a mock up on MS Paint (I haven't got Photoshop so I repainted a picture of a Hornby MN) and it did look quite good in lined black. I guess it will have early crest to match 44871 and 45407. I hope so as I prefer the early crest.

The article does mention John Bunch owing 35018 but he's only had it a few months hasn't he. It also says some of the parts have been moved up to Bury so maybe thats where the parts from the MHR were heading to.

The news about British India and Shaw Saville is great. It will almost certainly be quicker to make one sound loco from the best bits of the two then restore either one alone. Then, once the first is earning some income, the more problematic bits can be given the attention they need ready for when loco no. 1 becomes due for overhaul. Let's hope there are no nasty surprises lurking in '18 after all these years.

A class 8 loco with almost no gauging problems, apart from the obvious axle-weight limit, is very attractive. Though too big for most preserved lines, a Merchant Navy should be a viable proposition on the mainline.

Regarding the frame swap - it's probably too early to say which bits will actually be used first. It wouldn't be the first time The Beano has jumped the gun, and/or got muddled, over the details of a restoration. Likewise liveries - I did like CanPac in 1950s blue, and the idea of lined black is interesting, but it's much too early to worry about the pigment yet...

It'll be interesting to see '18 back, especially if she's done with the unique bits of the first rebuild. And though I normally prefer the later BR emblem, the pictures of '18 when outshopped with the cycling lion were quite attractive.

    '18 has a tender, '9 doesn't, as I understand it.

I understand that WCRC will have another Bulleid joining their stable alongside 34067 in the future along with another Class 5...................

Great news about 35018. She should give 35028 some competition performance wise after Ian has laid his hands on her. What were those stories a few years ago about him out-shopping a Super-Merchant Navy? (35009 IIRC)
