    Bloody modern camera's!

For the last three weeks mine has been happily shooting in DX crop. without telling me! :Banghead: :Banghead: :Banghead: The function is buried in a sub menu that once I've set the camera up I have no need to revisit, so how it happened is beyond me. :(

Pressed one of the buttons on the backplate while holding the camera perchance ? I find my thumb has to be carefully positioned on the backplate of my Nikon D610 else one of the functions changes without any advice given.

No I do not currently volunteer

If you normally shoot RAW check when you reset to FX that it hasn't defaulted to shoot .jpg. I experimented with the DX crop on my D800 a few years back for some wildlife shots ( and found no advantage ) but on reverting to full frame failed to notice the the 'image quality' setting had changed :(

Throughout this thread so far there has been no mention of Olympus SLRs. Their early film ones were small and almost bomb proof (my OM1 did a lot of mountaineering) and the later OM4Ti had innovative metering. The DSLRs and Zuiko lenses I have had have performed very well and in terms of bangs for bucks comfortably undercut Canon & Nikon.

The Zuiko lenses are generally superb and Olympus cameras are very nicely made, although many people find the menu system less than user friendly!

The main differentiator of the Oly system is that it uses the smaller m4/3 sensor, so performs a little worse than the crop sensor cameras and considerably worse than full frame when it comes to high iso performance and dynamic range. The advantage of the smaller sensor is that you can put together a slightly more compact kit than with the Canon or Nikon DSLRs, so if you're happy to trade a little image quality for a more compact system then it is a good option.

I think the only advantage of DX mode is file size, better to use full frame and crop as necessary. DX mode is really just the camera doing the crop for you.

On some cameras, the DX mode allows a faster frame rate and / or more shots before the buffer fills, which can be useful, particularly for nature photographers.

Nope, all I did was turn it on!!

I only shoot in RAW, and it still was and thankfully hadn't decided to shoot jpeg - that really would have upset me.........

Anyway. normal service has resumed, but if it happens again I'll be on the phone to Nikon.
