    There isn't a traction engine equivalent of light engine movements so you'll probably find that what you heard was one of those. (We are close to the start up of the events season are we not?)

    Yes sound does travel ! In the early 1960s when I lived at Corby I sometimes heard train sounds such as Sulzer engines at Glendon Junction - some 4 miles distant - heading up the main line to Leicester rather than through Corby on the main line to Nottingham.
